Notre Dame vs Duke Betting Odds: Can Duke Earn Another Top-25 Win?

The Blue Devils Will Look For a 5-0 Start To The Season on Saturday

The Duke Blue Devils will look to continue its surprise start to the season. Duke is 4-0 and will now host Notre Dame in an exciting AP top-25 matchup.

Duke already knocked off Clemson but has wins against Lafayette, Northwestern, and UConn, three teams unlikely to play in a bowl game this year.

Against Notre Dame, we’ll see if Duke’s win against Clemson was a fluke or not.

On the other hand, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish most recently took a loss to Ohio State. They’re now 4-1 on the season, with solid wins against teams like North Carolina State and Navy. However, a win against Duke would count slightly more than the others.

Take a look at the Notre Dame vs Duke betting odds for College Gameday’s Game of the Week on Saturday.

Notre Dame Needs To Bounce Back Offensively

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish have scored at least 41 points in four of five games. Of course, it lost in the game where Notre Dame didn’t score 41 points.

Notre Dame added only 14 points against Ohio State last week despite bringing in Sam Hartman as a transfer quarterback. The run game was successful, averaging 4.5 yards per carry.

However, Notre Dame ran 39 times and only gave Sam Hartman 25 attempts to throw the football.

That was not enough reps for Hartman, who has some of the best college football stats at quarterback this season.

Hartman still has a QBR near 80 and added one touchdown with no interceptions. The Fighting Irish need to throw the ball more with their quarterback.

They’ve had injuries at wide receiver, with Jayden Thomas, Deion Colzie, and Matt Salerno banged up. But there should be enough guys on the roster who can work with Hartman to complete some passes down the field.

More Turnovers, Please! Look for Notre Dame to get back to throwing the football. Against Duke, it won’t be easy, but the ground game should open up the passing game. We’ll talk about the game breakdown in a moment.

Riley Leonard Embraces The Doubters!

Every team has doubters and supporters. It’s just that the Duke Blue Devils aren’t used to being in this position.

Duke is ranked 17 in the AP Poll and is hosting College Game Day, with a game scheduled at 7:30 pm EST on ABC.

The Blue Devils are a popular basketball school. But nobody saw this coming.

Things changed for the Blue Devils when Duke quarterback Riley Leonard stepped on the field. He’s been a better college quarterback than Daniel Jones to this point. At least, that’s what the records say.

Leonard is 13-4 as a college starter and is a top-20 prospect in the NFL, according to Mel Kiper for the 2024 NFL Draft.

He typically embraces the doubt and has a hard time accepting positivity. He told his mom he needed someone to tell him he sucked sometimes.

Therefore, his mom will text him, “You suck,” before each game. That fires up Leonard to go out there and perform at a high level. He wants people to doubt him. It helps him perform at a higher level.

Everyone has their way of preparing for a game. Leonard’s is unique, and it’s indeed working.

Below, we’ll talk about the Notre Dame vs Duke betting odds for the most exciting game on the college football schedule this weekend.

Notre Dame vs Duke Betting Odds

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish are sitting at -5.5, with the total at 54 against the Duke Blue Devils. Although Duke is home, Notre Dame is the favorite. But oddsmakers suggest this game will be a one-score finish via the college football spread.

Notre Dame has gone 7-3 against the spread over the last ten games. This year, they’ve won four games against the spread of the five games this season.

The Fighting Irish even earned a 3.5-point cover against Ohio State despite losing by three at the last second of the game.

Although Notre Dame has an excellent defense, the Over has hit in three of five games to start the season. Dating back to last year, the Fighting Irish have watched their games hit the Over in eight of the previous ten games.

On the other hand, Duke has also covered three of their first four games this year. They’ve been favorites in all but one game. In that one game, Duke earned a 28-7 win over Clemson as a 12-point underdog.

Meanwhile, the total has gone 2-1-1 in the first month of the season for the Blue Devils.

The last time these two teams played was in September of 2020. Duke was a 21.5-point underdog and covered, losing 27-13.

Notre Dame’s Ground & Pound

Notre Dame has one of the best quarterbacks in college football, Sam Hartman. He’s led the Fighting Irish to 477.2 yards per game, including 278.4 yards in the air and another 198.8 yards on the ground.

Hartman only threw for 175 yards last weekend against Ohio State and will need to return to throwing the football more frequently.

It’s unlikely that this will be the week Hartman goes off. He’s facing a tough Duke secondary that has held teams to 143.3 yards per game in the air.

The Fighting Irish will succeed more on the ground, where Duke has allowed 133 yards per game. Audric Estime has already rushed for 591 yards and five touchdowns in five games. He’ll get the ball plenty in this game, and that should help wear down Duke’s defense.

Can Duke Keep Up With Notre Dame?

Believe it or not, Duke will play for a college football championship. The Blue Devils can’t afford to lose a game. If they don’t, they’ll have the ACC locked up and a CFP berth at their doorstep.

But let’s not overthink it.

Riley Leonard and the Duke offense have averaged nearly 425 yards per game this season, including 200.5 yards on the ground. Duke’s offensive line hasn’t been terrific blocking in the run game, so it’ll be a bit hard for Duke to have the same success running the football as Notre Dame.

The Fighting Irish are dominant against the run, holding teams to 111.2 yards per game. Therefore, Riley Leonard will have to throw the ball for some success.

The Blue Devils aren’t nearly as talented with their receivers.

Duke’s football story has been fun. But we’ve got Notre Dame covering the 5.5 points spread.
