San Jose State Spartans 2023 Future Odds: National Championship, Conference, Regular Season Wins and Player Props

Mountain West; Too Many Teams to Leapfrog

San Jose State finished 2022 with a 7-5 record (5-3 in the Mountain West) after dropping the Potato Bowl to Eastern Michigan (41-27). The Spartans lost two of their last three games to fall to a less significant bowl game after starting the NCAAF season 6-2. Brent Brennan’s team wasn’t so kind to bettors for the second straight year after failing to cover 7 of 11 games for the second straight season. As a favorite, San Jose State is 5-9 ATS (-445 units) and 3-5 ATS as a dog (-226 units) since 2021. The 2023 San Jose State Spartans stats must improve if Sparty has any hope of being in the conference title picture.

Brennan Needs to Build Off 7-Win Season

No one is ever going to confuse San Jose, California with some of the best College Football gameday experiences in the country, but if Brent Brennan can build off a seven-win season perhaps that will force the rest of the nation to recognize his program as one to watch in the future.

After a 3-22 start under Brennan, his Spartans have won an average of six games over the last four seasons. last year, San Jose State finished two games behind Fresno State (10-4/7-1) in the final MWC NCAAF standings. San Jose State is led by veteran quarterback Chevan Cordeiro, who is back for his sixth season. Behind Cordiero is Oregon transfer Jay Butterfield who will be the starter next season.

Every successful season must start with veteran leadership behind center and the Spartans have no shortage of talented signal callers. You can bet that most of the 2023 San Jose State Spartans Stats won’t meet the standard set in 2022, but QB won’t be an area of decline. So why is the Spartans win total just 5.5? It all comes down to their defense where San Jose State has massive question marks after losing Cade Hall and Viliami Fehoko.

In 2022, the Spartans harassed opposing offenses with the league’s best pass rush but likely will take a step back this year. Brennan will have to replace his entire front three, giving us clarity as to why the bookmakers have little faith in the Spartans who are trying to go over their lowest projected win total in the last three seasons. Last year, SJS went over their projected 6.5 wins, but a forfeit at New Mexico State made the future bet moot.

The secondary will return plenty of size in addition to defensive star Tre Jenkins at corner. The Spartans start off with a road game at USC, followed by their home opener against Oregon State. It’s likely that before they start conference play, they could be staring at a 1-3 record.

National Championship Odds: No Chance

The last time San Jose State played USC and Oregon State, they lost by a combined 65-28. There’s no way they get through that opening gauntlet, but if they do, Air Force and Boise State will be waiting for them to start the MWC schedule.

The highest the Spartans have ever been in a poll is 18th in 1939, and 19th in 2020, They finished the 2020 season 24th in the country. For a team expected to win 5-6 games, a national championship discussion would be a waste of time.

Conference Odds: Spartans Sliding Back After 2020 Title

We’re not sure we should count anything that happened in 2020, but the Spartans did officially win the Mountain West Conference, cashing a +10000 ticket. Last year, oddsmakers made the adjustment, making the Spartans opening odds +2500.

In 2023, most of the money is coming in on Fresno State at +380, while SJS is the fifth choice at +1400. We’ve never been a big fan of betting teams because they have perceived value like some have said about the Spartans. There isn’t value in losers and that is exactly what you’d have with a long-shot conference title wager. We think you’d have a better chance at cashing a 10-team College Football parlay than the Spartans winning the Mountain West.

Regular Season Wins: Are There Six Wins on The Schedule?

We’ve touched on the San Jose State schedule some, but now we’re going to go through past performances and see if that gives us some insight into finding enough wins to cash an over (5 1/2) ticket. You can forget wins against USC and Oregon State.

San Jose State’s first win will come against Cal Poly on September 9th. They follow that up with revenge spots for Air Force and Boise State after the Falcons lost as a 7.5 point favorite (17-6) and the Broncos as a 6.5 point favorite (34-20), both in 2020. You can bet that both programs will be focused on avenging those Covid losses. Their second win will come at New Mexico, bringing us to their most critical game of the season against Utah State.

Last year, the Spartans dropped a heartbreaker against the Aggies, 35-31, after clawing back from a 15-point deficit to take a late 31-28 lead. A home win could push the Spartans over their season win total. They’ll take out Hawaii for their third win with revenge games against Fresno State and San Diego State to follow. The Spartans close out their schedule with a road date with the upstart Rebels of UNLV.

We expect the 2023 San Jose State Spartans Stats to show Cordiero throwing for close to 3000 yards, with veteran RB Kairee Robinson in the 650-yard range, but throw their schedule in a mixing bowl and you’re looking at under five wins. They’ll need an unexpected win against the Air Force Falcons or Boise State Broncos to go over.
