SMU Mustangs 2023 Future Odds

SMU Could Battle For AAC Championship

The SMU Mustangs had a fair 2022 season, going 7-5 before losing in the New Mexico Bowl. SMU had a win total of 6.5, so the team played pretty much as expected. But the SMU Mustangs future odds show bigger things are expected from the team this season. The Mustangs will be good offensively and the defense should be better.

Big Time Talent Transferring to SMU

The Mustangs averaged 37.2 points per game last year and quarterback Tanner Mordecai transferred to Wisconsin. That leaves Preston Stone as the team’s quarterback. He was decent in limited time last year and he’ll have a good collection of receivers to throw to. Jordan Kerley and tight-end RJ Maryland each caught six TD passes last year. TCU transfer Jordan Hudson has some talent and Roderick Daniels and Moochie Wilson will see expanded roles.

The team’s leading rusher, Tyler Lavine, is back after rushing for 642 yards and 10 touchdowns. He’ll be joined by Miami transfer Jaylan Knighten to give the Mustangs several capable runners.

The offensive line was helped by the transfer portal, with the Mustangs bringing in players from Texas, Miami, and Notre Dame, among other schools. They should be at least as good as last year’s unit.

The defense wasn’t anything to get excited about last year. But it should be a little better this year. Miami transfers Elijah Roberts and Jordan Miller will help on the defensive line.

JaQwondis Burns, Temple transfer Kobe Lewis and Liberty transfer Ahmad Walker should see the bulk of playing time in the Mustangs’ 4-2-5 defense.

The secondary has some nice players and the Mustangs were again active in the transfer portal. It may not be a great unit, but it shouldn’t be bad, which is a good thing.

National Championship Odds: Little Chance

The Mustangs are going to be a very good football team. But to be in the NCAAF playoffs you have to be a great team. SMU doesn’t quite fall into that category, which is evident by the SMU Mustangs future odds of +40000 to win the national championship.

Conference Odds: Mustangs Have Solid Path to Championship Game

The SMU Mustangs future odds show the team is the No. 2 betting choice to win the AAC championship behind Tulane. SMU doesn’t play Tulane or UTSA during the regular season. The toughest conference game could be a late-season trip to Memphis. But if the Mustangs win the games they’re supposed to, they’ll finish high enough in the college football standings to play in the AAC championship game.

Regular Season Wins: Mustangs Can’t Afford to Stumble

The SMU Mustangs have a win total of 8 and an excellent chance to go over that number. SMU has a pair of tough non-conference road games that could very well see the team start 2-2. The Mustangs visit Oklahoma in the second week of the season. Two weeks later the Mustangs visit TCU. But those should be the toughest games SMU has until the game with Memphis.

SMU will be favored in its home games and should take care of business in front of the home fans. The Mustangs will have to show up to play at East Carolina and at Temple. But those are two games SMU should win. With the win total at 8, those whose college football betting methods tell them to take the over, have a little bit of a buffer. Even if SMU losses at Memphis, they’ll still go 9-3. SMU could lose to a team like Temple and still finish with eight victories, creating a push on the season win total. But SMU has the talent and the NCAAF schedule to win at least nine games this season. The odds are steep, but the over is the best way to go on SMU this season.
