Arkansas State Red Wolves Future Odds

Red Wolves Seeking Return to Winning Ways

The Arkansas State Red Wolves are trying to erase last year’s dismal 3-9 record. The Red Wolves played in nine straight bowl games between 2011-2019 but have won just nine games in the last three NCAAF seasons. Returning to the glory days isn’t going to be an easy task. Arkansas State has some talent, but so do a lot of Sun Belt Conference teams. The Red Wolves future odds suggest this could be another rough season for coach Butch Jones and Arkansas State.

Transfer Portal Will Play Big Role for Arkansas State

Arkansas State’s offense left a bit to be desired at times last year. But the Red Wolves still averaged 25 points per game. Quarterback JT Strout arrives from Colorado after previously starting his college career at Tennessee. He’ll have a decent group of receivers to throw to, including Corey Rucker, who is returning to the Red Wolves after a year at South Carolina. He’ll be joined by Jeff Foreman, who caught four TD passes last year.

Arkansas State needs to do a better job on the ground after averaging just 88 yards per game last year. The NCAAF rankings had Arkansas State No. 128 out of 131 teams in rushing yards per game. Johnnie Lang led the team with 419 yards last year and has moved on. Brian Snead is the team’s leading returning rusher with 299 yards and six touchdowns last year.

A lot of pressure will be on the offensive line to perform. Strout needs time to throw and the quarterback’s job is a lot easier if a defense has to respect the run. Three starters are back, and a few transfers have opportunities to fill the other roles.

Arkansas State allowed 31.4 points per game on defense. The Red Wolves simply have to do a better job stopping the opposition. That will not be easy, considering the Red Wolves need to replace nearly the entire defensive line. There is a bit of experience at linebacker and in the secondary.

This is the third year Davis will be at Arkansas State, and it’s time for some of his recruits to step up and play meaningful roles. Davis was a winner at Central Michigan, Cincinnati and Tennessee. It’s doubtful he forgot how to coach in the three years he was away from the game. But going 2-10 and 3-9 isn’t going to cut it at any school.

National Championship Odds

The Red Wolves future odds to win the title are +100000, which is the same as they were last year. That’s also the same as they will be next year. And Arkansas State has no chance to win a conference title, let alone a national championship.

Conference Odds: Red Wolves Are Huge Longshots

The Red Wolves future odds to win the Sun Belt Conference are +6000. That’s higher than +3500 last season when the team went 1-7 in conference play. This year’s team may be a little better than last year’s. The Red Wolves might also have a little better luck in winning a close game or two. But it’s unlikely Arkansas State can make enough of a turnaround to compete in the conference championship game. There are plenty of Sun Belt squads who are better college football teams than Arkansas State.

Regular Season Wins: Five Wins Will Be Tough

The NCAAF odds have Arkansas State at 4.5 wins this season, which is the same as it was last year. The schedule isn’t an easy one. The Red Wolves start the season at Oklahoma then host Memphis. After an easy game with Stony Brook, Arkansas State hosts Southern Miss and travels to UMass, two winnable games. But the remaining games at Troy, South Alabama and Marshall will be challenging. It will come down to home games with Coastal Carolina and Louisiana, along with a road game at ULM.

There are more likely losses than likely wins on the schedule, but the Red Wolves only need to win a couple of the ‘toss-up’ games to get that fifth victory.
