Syracuse Orange 2023 Future Odds

Orange Seeking Stronger Finish After Collapsing at End of 2022

The Syracuse Orange collapsed in 2022 yet still managed to make a bowl game, only their third in the last 10 seasons. Many believe they’re capable of getting back to the postseason, but it’ll take some heavy lifting in ACC play.

The conference is shaping up to be top-heavy, with Clemson and Florida State the clear frontrunners. While Syracuse likely isn’t good enough to topple them, expectations remain high for the Orange in 2023.

Read on as we break down the Syracuse Orange future odds in our team preview.

Offense in Transition After Second-Half Collapse

The Syracuse Orange started 6-0 but fizzled down the stretch last season, losing six of their last seven games. The Orange’s disappointing finish culminated with a 28-20 loss to Minnesota in the Pinstripe Bowl, per NCAAF scores. After climbing to 14th in the Associated Press Top 25 poll, the Orange ended the year unranked.

The seven-win season was Syracuse’s best since 2018 when it went 10-3 and won the Camping World Bowl. Despite that, the Orange left many wondering if they could’ve done more.

Exceeding that total in 2023 will be a challenge. Star running back Sean Tucker (1,060 rushing yards) left for the NFL. On top of that, highly acclaimed offensive coordinator Robert Anae departed within the conference to North Carolina State. Replacing them could prove difficult, though the Orange do return quarterback Garrett Shrader and tight end Oronde Gadsden II. That should help bolster an offense that finished 76th in the country in yards per game (374.8).

Competing atop the ACC feels like too much to ask. But head coach Dino Babers’ team should be able to hold its own and make a run at another bowl. That seems plenty reasonable.

National Championship Odds: Better Luck Another Year

Syracuse? National championship? Don’t count on it. The Orange may be improved, but they won’t be that improved. There are too many holes on the roster for the Orange to climb the ranks and outlast powerhouses like Clemson or Florida State.

Even at +30000, the Syracuse Orange future odds seem a bit high. Don’t bother trying to cash in. It is not going to happen.

Conference Odds: It’s Likely Clemson’s or Florida State’s to Lose

Since the preseason, Syracuse’s ACC odds have ballooned from +4800 to +8000. At the moment, only four schools have longer odds.

Clemson has won seven of the last eight ACC titles, with the exception of 2021 (Pittsburgh). Prior to that, Florida State won three straight titles from 2012-14. Both the Seminoles (No. 8) and Tigers (No. 9) are ranked again in the preseason AP Top 10, while North Carolina is No. 21.

All three are reasonable picks to win the ACC in 2023. The Orange are not. Carry on.

Regular Season Wins: Brutal Start to ACC Play May Determine Fate

Syracuse is projected for 6.5 wins, with the Over juiced to +120. It’s the highest total since 2019 when the Orange were forecasted for 8.0 after a breakthrough season under Babers. They wound up going just 5-7 that season but cashed in the Over in both 2021 and 2022.

How will they finish this season? That may largely depend on how they fare to start ACC play. After a manageable non-conference slate, which features matchups with FCS program Colgate, Western Michigan, Purdue, and Army, the Orange open conference play on Sept. 30 against Clemson at home. That’ll be followed up with trips to North Carolina and Florida State.

That’s a monstrous three-game stretch on the college football schedule, and it doesn’t help that two of those games are on the road. Much of the second half is a lot lighter, but it won’t matter if the Orange digs too deep a hole early.

To Make Playoffs: Not Under Consideration

There aren’t any Syracuse Orange future odds available in this market at the moment. That’s unlikely to change. Syracuse may be in line for a bowl, but it is nowhere near ready to compete for a spot in the College Football Playoff. It would need to pull off a few upsets to generate that type of respect.
