South Florida Bulls 2023 Future Odds

South Florida Primed for Improvement

South Florida was bad last season. Really bad. And South Florida will likely be bad this season. But they should be a little better than they were a year ago. That’s a low standard to measure a football team by, but the Bulls have to take baby steps before they can run with the big boys again. Remember, this is a team that played in four straight bowl games between 2015 and 2018 and was 36-15 in that time. The South Florida Bulls future odds show the sportsbook is expecting a little bit more from the team in 2023 than it showed last season.

South Florida With New Looks for New Season

This won’t be your old South Florida Bulls of the past few seasons. New head coach Alex Golesh should breathe some much-needed enthusiasm into the program. The former offensive coordinator at Tennessee and UCF has lots of players to replace on both sides of the ball.

One player Golesh won’t have to replace is quarterback Gerry Bohanon, who was knocked out for the season midway through the year. A two-way threat who played four years at Baylor, Bohanon threw for 1,070 yards and ran for 386 more. Leading rusher Brian Battie is done, but Michel Dukes returns after scoring five rushing touchdowns. Nay’Quan Wright transfers from Florida and he can also catch the ball out of the backfield.

The Bulls see their two top receivers gone, but third-leading receiver Sean Atkins is back and USF is bringing in Minnesota‘s Michael Brown Stephens and Jaden Alexis from Texas. The offensive line needs some work to give Bohanon the time to get the ball to his wideouts.

There’s good news and bad on the defensive side. The good news is that most of last year’s starters are back. The bad news is that most of last year’s starters are back, as they were dreadful. The Bulls finished second-to-last in total defense and third-to-last in scoring defense. The average NCAAF scores for USF last year were 28.0-41.2.

DJ Gordon IV will man one of the linebacker positions, with Davon Hicks at another. The linebackers should be in decent shape, while the secondary has plenty of depth of safety. The defensive line isn’t anything special, but you can say that about each unit of the defense after last season. It will be up to transfers and younger players to step up and take starting roles. After allowing 41.2 points per game, nobody’s position on the defensive side of the ball should be safe.

National Championship Odds: USF Has No Chance

The South Florida Bulls future odds of +100000 are the same as they were last year. It will take one of the best coaching jobs of the season to get USF to a minor bowl game, let alone a national championship.

Conference Odds: USF Will be Better, But Not This Much

The South Florida Bulls future odds of +5000 to win the conference are also the same as last season when they finished last in the AAC’s NCAAF standings. That shouldn’t happen again, but USF is nowhere near ready to compete for the conference title. On the plus side, there are two teams with higher odds to win the conference than USF and two others with the same odds. The Bulls play three of those four teams, giving them a chance to win a conference game or two.

Regular Season Wins: Four is Asking a Lot

The season win total of 4.0 seems a little ambitious for the Bulls. This is a team that has won eight games in the last four seasons. South Florida should start the season off 1-2. The Bulls open at Western Kentucky and the college football predictions have WKU nearly two touchdowns better than USF. The Bulls host Florida A&M next and USF should beat the Rattlers.

The next game could get ugly, as the Bulls play Alabama. But USF won’t be completely overmatched in its next five games, against Rice, Navy, UAB, FAU, and UConn. South Florida could win a game or two during that five-game stretch. Following its bye week, USF has a tough game at Memphis, hosts Temple, travels to UTSA, and plays at home against Charlotte. The two road games will be difficult to win. But the Bulls could win the home games.

Four wins look about right for South Florida this year. After the past few seasons, that should feel pretty good to USF.
