Purdue Boilermakers Future Odds

Purdue Expected to Take a Step Backward

The Purdue Boilermakers have enjoyed a nice two-year run that saw the team go 17-10 and play in two NCAAF bowl games. But head coach Jeff Brohm returned to his alma mater Louisville, leaving Ryan Walters to try and keep the momentum going. It won’t be an easy task.

The Boilermakers have just four returning starters back on defense and need to replace quarterback Aidan O’Connell. The Purdue Boilermakers future odds are calling for a bit of regression this year and it’s easy to see why.

Purdue Will be Tough But it Could Take Time

The last two NCAAF seasons of Purdue football are a tough act to follow. This year’s team is unlikely to reach eight or nine wins, but a return to a bowl game isn’t out of the question. But Purdue will need to catch a few breaks along the way.

O’Connell threw for 3,490 yards and 22 touchdowns last season and is off to the NFL. The Boilermakers picked up Hudson Card from Texas and Arizona State transfer Bennett Meredith, but it’s Card’s job to lose. He threw for 1,500 yards and 11 touchdowns in two seasons as a backup at Texas.

The running back situation isn’t in bad shape with leading rusher Devin Mockobee and Dylan Downing back, along with Tyrone Tracy Jr. Tracy also played wide receiver, so can be used in a variety of ways coming out of the backfield or line up outside.

The team sees the return of TJ Sheffield and Mershawn Rice at wideout, while the offensive line returns three starters and has Jalen Grant (Bowling Green) and Preston Nichols (UNLV) transferring in.

Walters was defensive coordinator at Illinois, so he knows how to work a stop unit. Illinois had one of the top defenses in the country last season. The defensive line is getting an infusion of talent from the transfer portal, with Arkansas’ Isaiah Nichols and Jeffrey M’Ba, from Auburn, among those coming in.

The linebackers should be a strength of the team with Kydran Jenkins, Khordae Sydnor, OC Brothers and Nic Caraway among those vying for playing time in the team’s 3-4 defense.

The defensive backfield sees the return of both starting safeties and the Boilermakers hope Stanford transfer Salim Turner-Muhammad can hold down one cornerback spot. Penn State transfer Marquis Wilson will also get a chance at cornerback.

National Championship Odds: No Chance For Purdue

The Purdue Boilermakers future odds suggest it’s going to be tougher for the team this year than last, when they were +8000 to win the championship. Even if Purdue were to somehow win the West, it’s unlikely they won’t pick-up several losses along the way. That’s not going to cut it.

Conference Odds: Plenty of Big Ten Teams Better Than Purdue

The Purdue Boilermakers future odds last season saw them at +3000 and they did reach the Big Ten title game. They’re unlikely to do that this season, as Wisconsin, Iowa and Minnesota all appear likely to finish higher in the NCAAF standings than Purdue. The schedule maker didn’t do Purdue any favors this season, as the Boilermakers play both Michigan and Ohio State from the East, along with Wisconsin, Iowa and the other West teams.

Regular Season Wins: .500 Will Get the Job Done

Purdue is one of those teams who figure to be right on the cusp of their win total. If the Boilermakers can go 6-6 it’s a return to a bowl game and a win for over bettors. The season win total wager could be decided early. Purdue has three non-conference games that are winnable, although they’re not walks in the park. Purdue opens with Fresno State, travels to Virginia Tech and welcomes Syracuse. The Boilermakers have to be on the right side of the NCAAF scores in at least two of those games.

Conference wins figure tough to come by this year, although home games against Illinois, Indiana and Minnesota are games that can be won. A road game at Northwestern may be Purdue’s best opportunity for a road victory in conference play. Nebraska is also a game the Boilermakers can steal on the road.

The college football predictions are calling for Purdue to have a tough season. But a bowl game is within reach provided the Boilermakers can win the games they’re supposed to and grab a win or two in the toss-up contests.
