Virginia Tech Hokies Future Odds

Hokies Hope to Rebound From Historically Poor Year

Head coach Brent Pry’s first season at Virginia Tech was as difficult as advertised. The Hokies won their fewest games since 1992, only their second season in the Big East Conference. A bottom-15 offense was largely to blame, but the problems don’t end there.

Can the Hokies improve in 2023-24? Or is it bound to be another long year in Blacksburg? Read on as we assess the Virginia Tech Hokies future odds in our team preview.

Tough Rebuild Continues Under Pry

Head coach Brent Pry still has a lot to fix as he enters his second season at Virginia Tech. The Hokies went 3-8 in 2022, including just 1-6 in ACC play, and failed to qualify for a bowl for only the second time since 1992.

Overhauling an offense that averaged only 19.3 points per game will be a priority. Returning starter Grant Wells, who threw for 2,171 yards and nine touchdowns, could face competition at quarterback from Baylor transfer Kyron Drones.

Running back Malachi Thomas is healthy again after missing eight games due to injury, but the arrival of North Carolina A&T transfer Bhayshul Tuten could cut into his carries. Last season, the Hokies scored fewer than 20 points five times according to college football scores.

Even if the Hokies are able to score more consistently, they still have a ways to go before contending again. The Hokies are just 14-21 combined over the last three seasons and have gone six straight years without a bowl victory. Last year was the first time in which they did not appear in the national polls since 2015.

Given those struggles, a NCAAF bowl appearance seems like the ceiling for Virginia Tech in 2023-24. It’s hard to see them doing much more.

National Championship Odds: Those Days are Long Gone

Remember Virginia Tech’s run to the NCAA title game in 1999 with Michael Vick? Those days are long gone. This isn’t a national championship-caliber program. Heck, it’s not even an ACC championship-caliber program. The Hokies are a +50000 longshot to win it all. Frankly, that seems too low.

The top of the ACC is too tough, and the Hokies simply don’t have the horses to become a serious contender again. At least not this season.

Conference Odds: Return to Contention Will Have to Wait

Seven of the last eight ACC titles have gone to Clemson, with the exception of 2021 (Pittsburgh). Florida State preceded that by winning three straight of its own. Virginia Tech’s last title came in 2010.

It’s no surprise, then, that Clemson (+140) and Florida State (+160) are favored again. Both NCAAF teams are ranked in the preseason Associated Press Top 10. Virginia Tech is far back on the board at +10000.

It’d take a major upset for Virginia Tech to leapfrog the field and reassert itself as an ACC contender. Don’t bother trying to cash in on those Virginia Tech Hokies future odds.

Regular Season Wins: Low Expectations Feed Low Bar

The Hokies are projected for 5.0 wins, their lowest total preseason total in more than a decade. That shouldn’t be difficult to clear. Then again, when making NCAAF predictions, it’s easy to forget how far this program has fallen since its heydays under head coach Frank Beamer.

Whether they can improve enough to hit the Over will largely depend, of course, on ACC play. The Hokies miss Clemson but do have to play Florida State (Oct. 7) and Louisville (Nov. 4), on the road no less. The non-conference college football schedule is a bit more manageable, starting Sept. 2 against Old Dominion. The Hokies are currently 14-point favorites (-110) and -495 on the moneyline, with Old Dominion priced +380. There are also dates with Purdue, Rutgers and Marshall.

Are the Hokies ready to get back to a bowl? At most, this seems like a push.

To Make Playoffs: Not Under Consideration

Perhaps one of these days Pry will have Virginia Tech competing again for national championships. But it won’t be this year. The Hokies will be fortunate to make a bowl, let alone the College Football Playoff. It’s why there aren’t any Virginia Tech Hokies future odds available in this market at the moment.
