Kansas State Aims to Repeat as Big 12 Champions

Texas, Oklahoma and TCU may get most of the attention in the Big 12 Conference, but it was Kansas State which came away with the conference title last season. The Wildcats have the players to reach the conference championship once again. But it’s never easy to repeat. The Kansas St. Wildcats future odds suggest the team could very well be in the mix to appear in the conference championship game once again.

Kansas State Offense Will Be Punishing

Kansas State’s offensive should be ahead of the defense in the early part of the season. The offense returns eight starters, including the entire offensive line. It’s one of the best in the country, with several future NFL players. They’ll be blocking for a few different faces this season.

Will Howard is back at quarterback after taking over when Adrian Martinez was injured. Howard threw for 15 touchdowns in seven games, while throwing four interceptions. He isn’t the runner Martinez was, but he stretches the field with the passing game.

Deuce Vaughn is gone after rushing for 1,558 yards and nine touchdowns. DJ Giddens is back after running for 518 yards and six TDs in a relief role. But the Wildcats also welcome FSU transfer Treshaun Ward, who ran for 628 yards and seven TDs. Kansas State has the backs to get the job done.

The transfer portal figures to help at receiver, where the team lost leading pass catcher Malik Knowles. Phillip Brooks, the team’s second-leading receiver is back, and Iowa transfer Keagan Johnson is a good one, but the Hawkeyes passing game is below average.

Just five starters return on defense, so there’s some work to be done there. The linebackers are going to be the strength of the defense, with leading tackler Austin Moore and Daniel Green. The line won’t be bad after bringing in a few transfers and having a few guys who saw some playing time last year.

The secondary is the biggest cause for concern. Safety Kobe Savage is the only returning starter. North Dakota State transfer Marques Sigle should help in the back.

National Championship Odds: Highly Unlikely

The Kansas St. Wildcats future odds suggest you can’t completely discount the team. But you probably won’t have them slated in your top four either. The Wildcats were +10000 last season. But the NCAAF schedule is tough, as always, and it’s unlikely Kansas State can get through Big 12 play with just one loss.

Conference Odds: Wildcats Have Talent to Repeat

The Kansas St. Wildcats future odds to win the Big 12 Conference last year were +1500, so they made their backers happy. You’re not going to get near that this season. The college football predictions have Texas as the team to beat in the Big 12, followed by Oklahoma and Kansas State. The Wildcats travel to Texas and visit Oklahoma State and Texas Tech, which are three tough games right there. They’ll need to win at least one to have a shot to reach the conference title game.

Regular Season Wins: Kansas State Can Go Either Way

The Wildcats are one of the tougher teams to figure out entering the season. A lot of that has to do with the defense, and the secondary in particular in the pass-happy Big 12.

The best case scenario is the new defensive backs excel from the start. If that’s the case, the Wildcats could win 10 games. The worse case scenario is the defensive backs struggle and the opposition lights up the college football scoreboard. If that happens, the Wildcats could be looking at closer to seven wins.

Kansas State’s third game of the season at Missouri isn’t a sure thing. The Tigers will be playing with revenge from last year’s 40-12 loss. Back-to-back games at Oklahoma State and Texas Tech in early October will be tough. The Wildcats could use a split in those two, especially since a home game with TCU is up next.

Then there’s the November game at Texas, which is a revenge game for the Longhorns. And the rivalry game at Kansas is another game that’s not going to be easy. The Wildcats have a rough road to travel to get to nine wins to go over the season win total.
