New Orleans Running Back Has Solid Stats
New Orleans Saints running back Alvin Kamara doesn’t have the stats some running backs do. But when you ask defensive players, Kamara is consistently rated as one of the best NFL players at the running back position. He can run and catch the ball, giving him an advantage over a lot of NFL running backs. When the defense is stopping the run, he’ll hurt you out of the backfield. If the defense is playing soft, Kamara can run the ball for four or five yards a pop. The Alvin Kamara career stats reflect what a solid two-way back he’s been in his career with the New Orleans Saints.
Norcross High School
Kamara has always been a pretty good receiver, going back to his high school days. As a senior at Norcross High School, Kamara had caught 22 receptions for 286 yards and five touchdowns. Of course, running the ball was his main skill, and he ran for 2,264 yards and 26 touchdowns, helping Norcross to its first-ever state championship. He was ranked the top dual-threat running back by 247Sports and signed with the Alabama Crimson Tide.
Alabama Crimson Tide
Kamara’s stay with Nick Saban was a forgettable one. He was injured early and required surgery in the preseason, then was redshirted as a freshman. A run-in with Saban saw Kamara suspended from the team, and he transferred to Hutchinson Community College, a junior college powerhouse.
Hutchinson Community College
Kamara had a solid season play for “The Hutch,” rushing for 1,211 yards and 18 touchdowns, earning NJCAA All American honors. His season caught the attention of Georgia and Tennessee. Kamara ultimately signed with the Vols.
Tennessee Volunteers
Kamara arrived in Knoxville, Tenn., and joined a loaded Tennessee backfield that also featured the Cleveland Browns’ John Kelly and Jalen Hurd. Despite splitting the touches, Kamara posted decent numbers with the Volunteers. The Alvin Kamara career stats at Tennessee show him rushing for 1,294 yards and 18 touchdowns to go with 74 receptions for 683 yards and seven touchdowns in two seasons. Kamara passed on his senior season to enter the NFL Draft and was taken in the third round by the Saints.
New Orleans Saints
As a rookie in 2017, Kamara rushed for 728 yards and eight touchdowns. He also had 81 receptions for 826 yards and five more scores. Kamara returned 11 kickoffs and had a 106-yard touchdown on one of them. That gave him an average of 31.5 yards per return.
Kamara rushed for 883 yards and 14 touchdowns in 2018. He again had 81 receptions and scored four times.
He slightly declined in 2019, but rebounded with his best NFL season in 2020. Kamara rushed for 932 and 16 TDS, adding 83 receptions for 756 yards and five scores. As a result, Kamara’s NFL MVP odds for the 2021 season were +6600.
But Kamara played in just 13 games and 2021 and missed the first three games in 2023 due to a suspension.
Through the first nine games of the 2023 season, Kamara has rushed for 346 yards. Barring a strong finish, it will be Kamara’s fewest rushing yards in any season. But he had 43 receptions, which puts him on pace for 81 for the season.
The Alvin Kamara career stats show 1,221 carries for 5,455 yards and 51 touchdowns. That’s an average of 4.5 yards per carry. Kamara also has 469 receptions for 3,981 yards and 23 more touchdowns.
In the postseason, Kamara has rushed for 357 yards in seven NFL games and added 33 receptions for 274 yards. He has a total of four touchdowns. He should get a chance to add to his postseason numbers if the current NFL odds are correct. The Saints are favored to win the NFC South and have a one-game lead over Atlanta.
