Miami’s Quarterback? Skylar Thompson’s Stats For 2023

Thompson Battles Mike White To Potentially Start For Miami

The Miami Dolphins continue to have questions at quarterback. Tua Tagovailoa, the incumbent starter, should be ready to go. But he’s been injury-prone, and one bad hit could send him back to the injury list. Thus, Skylar Thompson and new acquisition Mike White will battle it out to determine who gets to be Tagovailoa’s backup. Bank on Skylar Thompson’s stats will be filled for 2023 as he earns another start.

Skylar Thompson’s Career Thus Far

Playing Like a 7th-Round Pick

The Dolphins drafted Thompson in the final round of the 2022 NFL Draft. He was supposed to be a third-string quarterback, but injuries to Tagovailoa and Teddy Bridgewater forced him to play. Given his expectations, the 26-year-old acquitted himself. However, he did play like a player taken with the 247th pick.

Thompson completed 57.1% of his passes and threw one touchdown to three interceptions. He had a passer rating of 62.2. In the playoffs, it got ugly as he completed just 40% of his 45 attempts for 220 yards, a touchdown, and two picks.

In short, it was a rough season for Thompson. But with the invaluable experience, he could return stronger for 2023 if given another shot. He could improve on his 2022 NFL QB stats, as the competition with White should also push him to learn as fast as possible.

Skylar Thompson’s Player Profile & Stats

Skylar Thompson’s stats were expected out of a third-stringer with a history of injuries and inconsistent production in college. He was drafted out of Kansas State, where he played for five seasons. Most scouts expected him to be undrafted, but Miami took him late, and he impressed well enough in the 2022 preseason for the team to keep him around.

2023 Stats

Given his stats, Thompson may have been one of the worst NFL players in 2022. Still, Thompson was good enough to win Miami a game, and he did complete a game-winning drive in a must-win game for Miami.

How Good Can Thompson Be For Miami?

For the team’s sake, he better be significantly improved. White showed a bit more in his stint with the Jets and should be favored as the backup to Tagovailoa. But if Skylar Thompson’s stats are any indication, he could beat White or get cut from the team. He’s also still an injury risk, given his history.

But other NFL teams could look at Thompson and see a worthwhile backup. So the Missouri man could go from starting an NFL playoff game to looking for a new team. Or he could find himself right where he left off. That’s football.
