Patriots vs Jets Betting Odds Preview: Low Expectations on the Totals

“I Want to Watch This Game”, Said No One Ever

AFC East Matchup Has Week 3’s Lowest Total

Only steadfast fans of both the Patriots and Jets will give a dung about this game. This is the least sexy game of Week 3 as the low total of 36.5 points indicates. Both teams are built like old-school defenses and are led by middling offenses. The Patriots vs Jets betting odds also see the former favored by 2.5 points as Bill Belichick tends to have his way with the green team.

Belichick Goes For 15 Against Jets

Count ‘em: 14 straight wins for Bill Belichick against his former team. That’s right. Belichick’s Patriots have not lost against the Jets since December 27, 2015. This was also the last time the Jets had a winning record: 10-6. That’s why it’s almost automatic that the Patriots vs Jets betting odds favor his team.

The Patriots are also 8-2 against the spread (ATS) in their last 10 meetings with the Jets. And if you want to laugh at how lopsided this “rivalry” is, check out these NFL stats: the Pats outscored the Jets 297 to 110. The turnover differential is +20 (24-4) for New England.

And the Pats’ quarterbacks completed 71.1% of their passes. Even Mac Jones is 4-0 against the Jets with a 72.7% completion rate and a 97.6 passer rating.

The Pats’ defense has also dismantled whatever offense the Jets put up. That’s why the total has gone under 10 of these teams’ last 14 meetings. That includes five of the last six games in MetLife Stadium.

And with how poor New England’s offense has looked this season so far, this trend might continue. Even with Bill O’Brien now commanding the offense, New England has mustered 37 total points in two games. The team is struggling to run the ball and is committing costly turnovers.

Still, the Patriots are favored on the NFL point spreads because Jones has a better track record than his Jets counterpart: Zach Wilson. And even with the unflattering stats, the Pats are moving the chains. At -150 on the moneyline, this team could just extend its streak to 15 wins against the Jets.

Can Jets Finally Get Over the Hump?

But everything comes to an end. Even nightmarish things like this losing skid. Jets wide receiver Garrett Wilson is more than ready to put this skid to the rest.

“It’s time that things change around here,” Wilson said on ESPN New York’s Bart & Hahn. “I don’t like talking about it too much, but this is one of the first steps. Fourteen straight is unacceptable. That’s unacceptable. I’m 0-2 against them. That’s unacceptable.”

Last year’s Offensive Rookie of the Year put up 1,103 receiving yards on 83 catches. He had 127 yards on eight receptions and an 80% catch rate in his two games against the Pats. But his team couldn’t get it done as the Jets managed just 20 total points.

In their last game in East Rutherford, the Jets actually outgained the Patriots. But three turnovers proved to be the difference. And two weeks later, the Jets infamously managed just 103 total yards and six first downs as they lost 10-3.

With these mind-blowing scores, it’s no wonder the Patriots vs Jets betting odds have a measly total of 36.5 this Sunday. The Jets have averaged just 10.6 points on average in its last five games versus New England. In two of its last four meetings, the Jets did not even hit double figures in scoring.

This is just one of those NFL matchups where one team owns the other. And with Wilson still under center for the Jets, we won’t fault anyone for fading the Jets even at +130 on the moneyline.
