Much of the NFL news has been focused on the quality of different quarterbacks, one by one, as they get eliminated from the playoffs. What if the playoff exit of players like Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson is more about the greatness of Patrick Mahomes and less about their inadequacies?
This is a wise point made by The Ringer’s Ryen Russillo on his latest podcast after yet another Chiefs upset to head to the Super Bowl. With the benefit of hindsight, it has become clear that many of these NFL players had the unfortunate luck of playing in the same era as Jordan. Mahomes could be the NFL’s version of Jordan if his postseason success continues.

Mahomes Has Already Played in 17 Playoff Games and Won 2 Super Bowls
Mahomes is an impressive 14-3 in the NFL playoffs during his career. Just the fact that Mahomes has played in 17 postseason NFL games before the age of 30 is enough to turn heads.
Mahomes has thrown for 4,802 yards, 39 touchdowns, and 7 interceptions with a passer rating of 106.3. In the words of Randy Moss, “Straight cash, homie.”
Mahomes’ biggest stat is being on the verge of playing in his fourth Super Bowl. The star quarterback already has two Super Bowl rings in the trophy case.
Mahomes’ Past Playoff Success Is a Good Indicator More Is Coming
This playoff success is contagious and was never clearer than during the Chiefs’ win over the Ravens in the AFC Championship. Kansas City remained confident while Ravens players made critical penalties and turnovers in key moments.

These previous 17 playoff games make it even more likely Mahomes will have more postseason success. All the past playoff momentum builds confidence, creating a quarterback who expects to win every playoff game.
Usually, he’s right. As for Mahomes chasing Tom Brady’s GOAT status, the former NFL quarterback believes it is two separate conversations.
