Super Bowl Gatorade Color Odds, History & Trends

Gatorade Props: Yellow/Green the Early Featured Favorite at +275

Super Bowl LVIII is upon us, and is usual, sportsbooks are offering their share of exotic props. For the sake of this article, we’re focused on one of the Super Bowl’s longstanding traditions, the celebratory postgame Gatorade bath. That’s right, bettors can predict what color Gatorade the winning coach will be doused with!

It’s undoubtedly one of the zaniest props on the board for the big NFL game, but bettors can turn a nice profit if they correctly predict the color of choice.

Uncover Exclusive Picks & Predictions From Our Experts.

This year’s Super Bowl at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas features the San Francisco 49ers facing the defending champion Kansas City Chiefs. The 49ers opened as 2.5-point favorites, but those Super Bowl odds were quickly bet down to -1.

Clearly a majority of bettors are hesitant to fade Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who is 10-1-1 ATS and 9-3 SU in his career as an underdog, according to NFL QB stats.

What team will win? Better yet, what will be the Gatorade color of choice? Let’s break down the latest Gatorade prop bets.

Super Bowl LVIII Gatorade Odds

Yellow/Green (+275)

For some reason, Yellow/Green is the early leader in the clubhouse. Why? Well, to be honest, we’re not sure. It’s not as if this flavor’s been used in a lot of postgame celebrations lately. In fact, we haven’t seen it since Super Bowl LII between the Eagles and Patriots. Prior to that, you’d have to go back to Super Bowl XLIII.

For those who aren’t adept at Roman numerals, we’re talking twice in the last 15 years.

Orange (+300)

Orange happened to be the flavor of choice for Kansas City when these NFL teams met four years ago in Super Bowl LIV. It’s also the most common flavor for this occasion, having been used five times.

If the Chiefs are superstitious, we can count on seeing it again. Then again, they fared quite fine last year with a different color.

Blue (+375)

Blue has been the go-to flavor in recent NFL seasons, having been used in three of the last five post-Super Bowl celebrations and four times in all.

Familiarity plays in betting, so it wouldn’t be surprising to see that flavor featured once more.

Red/Pink (+500)

Sure, both the Chiefs and 49ers have red color schemes. But before jumping to conclusions, remember this: only seven times since 2001 (31.8%) has the color of Gatorade matched the team’s primary color scheme at the Super Bowl. That’s not a strong enough trend to move the needle here.

Clear/Water (+600)

Since 2001, either clear-colored Gatorade or water has been dumped on coaches four times, matching the second-highest total behind Orange. Tom Coughlin was the last recipient, when the Giants upset the Patriots’ bid for a perfect season in Super Bowl XLII.

Considering that was 16 years ago, bettors have some history to overcome if they choose this route.

Purple (+900)

Bettors may have been surprised last year to see Andy Reid doused in Purple Gatorade following the Chiefs’ 38-35 victory over the Eagles in Super Bowl LVII. It was the first time in 11 years that purple was featured at the Super Bowl. That explains why Purple’s odds were +850 before kickoff.

Purple was the color of choice only twice previously, including most recently in Super Bowl XLVI.

No Gatorade Bath (+1400)

Coaches have avoided Gatorade baths only four times at the Super Bowl since 2001. The last to do so was New England’s Bill Belichick following Super Bowl LI. Notably, that was the first overtime game in Super Bowl history.

Belichick also stayed dry in Super Bowl XXXVI and XXXVIII, so perhaps it was just a preference of his.

Reid clearly doesn’t mind getting soaked in Gatorade. NFL odds are, San Francisco’s Kyle Shanahan won’t either.

Where Can You Bet on the Gatorade Prop?

A majority of sportsbooks will offer Gatorade prop bets, however, they’re prohibited in certain U.S. states. This prop will only be available in Arizona, Indiana, Louisiana, New Jersey, West Virginia and Wyoming, as well as Washington D.C.
