Cagliari FC Stats & History
Cagliari Calcio was founded in 1920 and are based in Sardinia. They were the first outright champions of Serie C in 1952, but didn’t achieve promotion to Serie A until 1964.
Italy’s all-time leading scorer, Gigi Riva, was Cagliari’s star player during the 1960s and 70s. He left his mark on the Cagliari FC stats, as he’s their all-time leading scorer with 205 goals. Riva was Serie A’s top scorer in 1966-67, and Cagliari finished in second in 1968-69.
The Isolani became the first team South of Rome to win the Serie A title in 1969-70. The next season, Cagliari played in the European Cup for the first and only time, and made the round of 16. As Riva’s career was winding down, Cagliari were relegated in 1976.
Cagliari bounced around divisions for the better part of 15 years, even spending some time in Serie C. However, Cagliari had a seven-year spell in Serie A from 1990 to 1997 and made the UEFA Cup in 1993. They made the semifinals, which remains their best performance as an Italian soccer league team in a UEFA competition, to date.
