Yankees’ Jimmy Cordero Sidelined for Violating MLB’s Domestic Violence Policy

He’s Out for the Rest of the 2023 Season

Jimmy Cordero, relief pitcher for the New York Yankees, won’t be seen on the field for the rest of 2023 season. The Major League Baseball (MLB) made an announcement on Wednesday saying that Cordero violated the MLB’s rules on domestic violence, sexual assault, and child abuse, although the details on which part of the policy he violated haven’t been revealed yet. Still, the Jimmy Cordero suspension is anything but downplayed.

Cordero isn’t fighting the decision. He’s agreed to take the suspension and has already been placed on a list known as the ‘restricted list’. That means he won’t be paid during this period. This change is immediate.

Jimmy Cordero Career Stats

Cordero, who throws with his right hand, is 31 years old. He’s been playing baseball since he was signed by the Blue Jays as a fresh-faced amateur free agent back in 2012. He’s worn the jerseys of the Nationals, Blue Jays, White Sox, and now Yankees at the top level of baseball.

His MLB standings of the season so far saw him step onto the mound 31 times, holding a 3.86 ERA and striking out 34 batters while only walking 10 in 32 2/3 innings.

Big Loss for the Yankees

The Yankees are going to feel this loss. Their relief crew has been one of the main reasons they’re still in the game despite a slower offensive performance. Since star baseball player Aaron Judge got sidelined with a torn ligament in his right big toe, their relievers have stepped up, boasting a 2.82 ERA, the best in the majors.

In response to the situation, the Yankees gave a clear and stern statement. They fully back the MLB’s actions and condemn domestic violence in spite of what the Jimmy Cordero suspension will do to their standings. They are one hundred percent behind the MLB’s rules on this matter.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone was taken aback by the suspension news, saying he only heard about it last night. He was aware of an ongoing investigation but had limited details.

Overall Suspension History

With 76 MLB games left for the Yankees this season, the Jimmy Cordero suspension applied essentially equates to 76 games. Here’s a list of the longest suspensions so far under the domestic violence policy:

Trevor Bauer: 194 games (324 games originally; reduced with an appeal)
Sam Dyson: 162 games
José Torres: 100 games
Carlos Martínez: 85 games
Odubel Herrera: 85 games
Héctor Olivera: 82 games
Domingo Germán: 81 games
Jimmy Cordero: 76 games

Next Steps for Cordero

Cordero will take part in a confidential evaluation and treatment program, overseen by the Joint Policy Board, as part of his suspension. The exact details of his violation have not been disclosed, and won’t be as of yet.

A major shift in the Yankees’ bullpen, Cordero won’t be throwing his signature fastball or slider for the rest of this season. It’s a blow for the team, but it’s a reminder that the MLB is firm in its stance against domestic violence.
