Leeds United Stats & History

Leeds United FC formed in 1919 and first played in the semi-professional Midland League. In 1920, they entered into the Football League and first won promotion to the First Division in 1924.

In the early years, Leeds went trophy-less but were in the top flight for most of the 30’s. In 1948, Leeds were demoted to the Second Division once again, but returned to the top tier in 1956. John Charles was the star player during this time, and led many of the Leeds United stats.

Charles’s 38 goals in 1956-57 remains the most-ever goals by a Leeds player in a top flight season. Charles left for Juventus shortly after, and Leeds returned to the second tier in 1960.

One of the best periods in Leeds United’s history was in the late 1960’s. Under Don Revie, Leeds returned to the First Division in 1964, and finished second in the league in each of the next two seasons.

Leeds United FC Team Records

In 1968 Leeds won their first major trophy, defeating Arsenal 1-0 in the League Cup final. That season, Leeds United also won the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup over Ferencvaros. The Leeds United stats in 1968-69 were some of their best ever. They managed their most points, fewest defeats, and a 34-match unbeaten run that extended into 1969-70.

Leeds won their first league title in 1969 and won again five years later. In the meantime, United also won the 1971 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup and the 1972 FA Cup. Revie left the club in 1974 to manage England, and is their most successful manager of all time.

Under Jimmy Armfield, Leeds made the 1975 European Cup final but lost to Bayern Munich. In 1981, Leeds were relegated and didn’t return to the First Division until 1990. In 1992, Leeds won their third league title and were a founding member of the Premier League the following season.

They finished third in 1999-2000, which is their best ever Premier League finish. Leeds were relegated in 2004 and were in the third tier from 2007-10. After a sixteen-year absence, Leeds returned to the Premier League in 2020. Jesse Marsch’s Leeds avoided relegation on the final day in 2022, with a 2-1 win vs. Brentford.

Leeds United finished in 17th in the Premier League in 2021-22, despite conceding 26 more goals than 18th place Burnley. When betting on their EPL odds, keep in mind that they allowed an average of over two goals per game from 2020-2022. If this remains to hold true in 2022-23, some betting advice would be to eye the opponent’s over on the team’s total goals, or bet the opponent on the goal line.
