FC Spartak Moscow Stats & History

Spartak Moscow comes from the Russian Gymnastics Society “Sokol”. Not created for gymnastics only, as the name implies, it was a multi-sport society founded in 1883. The society first started to play soccer in 1897 and became professional in 1909.

In 1920, they became known as Moscow Sports Club and finally, in 1934, the name Spartak Moscow was adopted. The Soviet Top League was established in 1936, and Dynamo Moscow won the first championship. Another edition of the league was held the same year, and Spartak Moscow won it to bring home their first-ever trophy.

The first domestic double in the FC Spartak Moscow stats comes from 1938. They won both the Soviet Top League and Soviet Cup, in 1938 and 1939. One of the club’s best periods was in the 1950s, when they won four league titles. The Soviet national team was populated mostly by Spartak Moscow players during this time.

Spartak suffered a decline by the late 60s and were relegated for the first time in 1976. However, they returned to the Soviet Top League and won it again in 1979. The following season, they made the quarterfinals of the European Cup for the first time.
