2024 Puppy Bowl: Betting on the Dogs Takes On New Meaning

Super Bowl Sunday is a day for placing non-traditional wagers. The coin toss, the length of the National Anthem and what color Gatorade is poured on the winning coach are a few examples. But for those looking for something completely different, the sportsbooks have you covered.

It’s the 2024 Puppy Bowl, the annual “game” between adoptable pooches. Puppy Bowl is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. And there are people who will celebrate that anniversary with a wager or two.

Don’t laugh, the Puppy Bowl is big business. Broadcast on Animal Planet, Discovery Channel, TBS, HBO Max and Discovery+, Puppy Bowl XIX reached more than 13.2 million viewers. It was the highest-rated non-sports cable broadcast of the day. The 2024 Puppy Bowl could exceed last year’s viewership.

The game has received a bit more hype this year, being a major anniversary.

2024 Puppy Bowl Betting Odds

Just as there are Super Bowl odds, there are Puppy Bowl odds. This year, Team Fluff is a -125 favorites over Team Ruff. For comparison, the NFL scores and odds have the San Francisco 49ers -130 over Kansas City. The odds on the game’s MVP (Most Valuable Puppy) are -125 it will be a male. If the MVP is a mixed breed, the odds are -800. Betting that the MVP is a pure bred returns +425.

The NFL odds are -170 the MVP will be younger than 17.5 weeks old, while those betting the older will receive +130. The price is -120 on the name of the MVP. You can wager on A-J or K-Z. You can also wager if any puppy attempts to mate. Yes, really. The odds on the no are -800, while those who bet on the yes will be rewarded with odds of +425. But be forewarned, your friends might look at you strangely if you start to celebrate a mating attempt.

If you think the total on the Super Bowl is high, the 2024 Puppy Bowl over/under easily surpasses that number. The total is 145.5, with the under coming in at -130. Apparently the sportsbooks aren’t expecting another 87-83 shootout like we saw last year.

How the Game Works

The rules of Puppy Bowl are pretty simple. Dogs have to be between 12 and 21 weeks old, vaccinated and get along with other puppies. When a puppy takes a chew toy across the goal line a touchdown is scored. There is a referee on the field, who calls “penalties,” such as “unnecessary ruffness,” or “premature watering of the field.” There’s no telling what the puppies will do to try and bring home the coveted Lombarky Trophy.

While there have been some blowouts in the past, the last four Puppy Bowls have been decided by four points each. That includes last year’s overtime thriller. If you’re more of a feline fanatic, you’ll want to catch the Kitty Halftime Show. So there’s something for animal lovers of every type.

So go ahead and make your NFL betting picks for the Super Bowl. But for some added entertainment, don’t overlook the furriest game in town.
