Overall

Compared to some Mountain West Conference teams, Boise State Broncos men’s basketball doesn’t have an extensive Division 1 history. However, the program quickly made up for the time missed on the big stage. Before making the move up a Division, the Broncos lost a close game against the UC Riverside Highlanders and won their Regional 3rd Place against the Sacramento State Hornets in the Division II Tournament.

Although the school would immediately join the Big Sky Conference, it would not receive recognition since they were labeled as a non-major program. The team was average under Murray Satterfield’s leadership, but the school would make its first appearance at the dance in the 1976 season.

After being beaten by the Runnin’ Rebels in the opening round, the foundation for the program needed to be laid. Over the next twelve years, the program found some consistency after several coaching changes.

The school punched a ticket three times under Bobby Dye in the 1988, 1993, and 1994 seasons. The school would get invited to the National Invitation Tournament between those years. Dye would bring the program some recognition on the national stage, but neither NCAA Tournament appearance produced at least one win.

Over the next decade, the school would have some success or just be average. Greg Graham was hired by Gene Bleymaier in 2002 to restore success to the athletic department after making more conference transitions. As a member of the Western Athletic Conference, Graham was poised to bring back some momentum.

A Change is Needed

Boise State’s team stats were generally solid during his eight-year tenure as they earned several postseason berths, including the 2004 NIT, 2008 NCAA tournament, and 2009 College Basketball Invitational. Still, the 2008 NCAA Tournament push would end quickly as the Louisville Cardinals have the program’s number.

Graham’s tenure came to an end after a 15-17 start in the 2010 season. However, the program thanked him for his efforts over the years, but it was clear a change was needed.

Rice led Boise State to the semifinals of the 2011 College Basketball Invitational and the finals of the 2011 WAC men’s basketball tournament as head coach. The change was a major success as Rice became the first coach in the school’s history to bring consecutive 20-win seasons.

The Broncos are still searching for an NCAA Tournament win but were very close to achieving that goal in 2015. However, the team lost a one-point game against the Dayton Flyers. The Broncos beat the odds in the 2022 season by going 27-8, which is also the highest win total to date for the school.

During the regular season, the team went 15-3 in the conference and achieved a position in the AP 25 as the 23rd-best team in the nation. Without a second of doubt, Leon Rice will be entering his 12th season with the team, and he has high NCAAB odds to lead the school to another trip to the dance.
