Sacramento State Hornets Basketball History
Overall
The Sacramento State Hornets are a Division I program located in Sacramento, Calif. Sacramento State competes in the Big Sky Conference and is coached by David Patrick.
Since transitioning to Division I in 1991, Sacramento State has yet to compete in the NCAA Tournament or the National Invitational Tournament. The Hornets’ only postseason appearance at this level came in the 2015 CollegeInsider.com Tournament. Despite a second-round loss to Northern Arizona, they beat the odds to win a program-record 21 games.
Sacramento State made the NCAA Tournament four times at the Division II ranks, including a run to the national championship in 1962. The Hornets beat Nebraska Wesleyan 74-73 in double overtime in the Final Four but lost 58-57 in overtime to Mount Saint Mary’s in the final. Their other tournament trips came in 1959, 1970 and 1988.
Patrick just completed his first season as head coach, with a 14-18 record. He previously was an associate head coach at Oklahoma and was also an assistant with the Australian men’s national team. He replaced Brandon Laird, who was 11-18 as the interim in 2022 after Brian Katz retired abruptly because of health reasons.
Katz was the program’s longest-tenured coach, having spent 13 years at the helm. He went 150-232 over that time, with just two winning seasons (21-12 in 2015 and 16-14 in 2020). The only other coach to even finish .500 was Jerome Jenkins, with a 15-15 mark in 2006.
Before the Big Sky, Sacramento State had a brief stint in the American West Conference.
