Duquesne Dukes Basketball History

The Duquesne Dukes are a Division I program located in Pittsburgh. Duquesne has been a member of the Atlantic 10 Conference since 1976, except for the 1992-93 season, when the school competed in the Midwestern Collegiate Conference.

While Duquesne hasn’t had much recent success, it does have its share of prized accomplishments. Duquesne made the Final Four in 1940, the Elite Eight in 1952, and won the National Invitational Tournament in 1955 when the tournament was considered a premium event. In 1953-54, the Dukes were ranked No. 1 in the country for two consecutive weeks by the Associated Press.

Altogether, Duquesne appeared in the NIT six times during the 1950s, including a run to the finals in 1954. The school also made the third-place game in 1962 and the quarterfinals in 1964. Duquesne’s combined record across 17 appearances in 17-19.

NCAA Tournament Drought of 46 Years

The school’s track record in the NCAA Tournament is less distinguished. Duquesne advanced to the regional semifinals in 1969 and lost in the first round in 1971 and 1977 but has not been back since. At 46 years, its NCAA Tournament drought is one of the longest in the nation. Duquesne’s most recent postseason appearance was in the quarterfinals of the 2016 College Basketball Invitational.

Notably, Duquesne was the first school to produce back-to-back No. 1 overall picks in the NBA Draft. Sihugo Green was selected first overall by the Rochester Royals in 1956, a year after Dick Ricketts was taken at the top of the draft by the Milwaukee Hawks. Both players’ numbers were later retired by Duquesne, along with those of Norm Nixon, Mike James, Chuck Cooper and Willie Somerset. Cooper, selected 14th overall by the Boston Celtics in 1950, was the first Black player drafted by the NBA.

Duquesne won its only two A-10 regular season titles in 1980 and 1981. The Dukes will have to overcome enormous NCAAB odds in order to end that drought in 2022-23, as they were picked last in the 15-team preseason poll.
