St. Bonaventure Bonnies Basketball History
Overall
The St. Bonaventure Bonnies are a Division I program located in Allegany, N.Y. St. Bonaventure has been a member of the Atlantic 10 Conference since 1979 and is coached by Mark Schmidt.
St. Bonaventure has been, if nothing else, steady under Schmidt. The Bonnies have won 18 games or more nine times in his 15 seasons, and that doesn’t count the COVID-shortened 2020-21 campaign when they made the NCAA Tournament. The Bonnies, who swept the A-10 regular season and tournament titles, wound up losing in the first round of the Big Dance to Louisiana State.
Schmidt, the winningest coach in program history, also took the Bonnies to the NCAA Tournament in 2012 and 2018, in addition to the National Invitational Tournament semifinals in 2022.
The 2012 team, which won 20 games and its first A-10 Tournament championship, featured Andrew Nicholson. The Canadian forward was one of the most accomplished players in program history. He earned A-10 Player of the Year honors as a senior, in addition to All-American honorable mention, and finished his career as the Bonnies’ second all-time leading scorer, with 2,103 points. He was taken in the first round (19th overall) of the 2012 NBA Draft by the Orlando Magic.
St. Bonaventure has had 10 other All-Americans in its history, including future NBA Hall of Famer Bob Lanier, a catalyst in the school’s 1970 Final Four run. Lanier averaged 29.2 points and 16 rebounds as a senior, helping the Bonnies to 25 wins. However, a knee injury prevented him from playing in the national semifinal against Jacksonville.
Lanier was drafted first overall by the Detroit Pistons in 1970, and the next season the Bonnies made it to the NIT semifinals, where they lost to Georgia Tech. In 1977, St. Bonaventure won the NIT title under Jim Satalin, defeating Houston 94-91 behind 40 points from Greg Sanders. With 2,238 career points, Sanders is the program’s all-time leading scorer.
Despite its recent success, St. Bonaventure faces long odds entering 2022-23, as it was ranked 10th in the A-10 preseason poll.
