Idaho Vandals Basketball History

The Idaho Vandals are a Division I program located in Moscow, Idaho. Idaho has had two separate stints in the Big Sky Conference, the second of which began in 2014.

Idaho has been to the NCAA Tournament four times. Its most recent appearance was in 1990, the second of back-to-back trips under Kermit Davis. The Vandals swept the Big Sky regular season and tournament titles in both seasons. Idaho’s initial stint in the Big Sky was from 1963-96. It joined the Big West starting in 1996-97.

The Vandals went 25-6 in 1989, including 13-3 in conference play, then finished with the same record the following season. In both instances, they fell in the first round of the Big Dance.

The school’s single-season record for wins is 27, set in 1981-82. The Vandals advanced to the Sweet 16 that season, falling to No. 2 seed Oregon State. At the time, the tournament consisted of just 48 teams. They were ranked sixth in the final Associated Press poll.

Idaho made its tournament debut in 1980-81, losing in overtime to Pittsburgh in the opening round. The school has also made one appearance in the National Invitational Tournament.

The Vandals’ postseason history also includes four appearances in the CollegeInsider.com Tournament, with a combined record of 3-4. Additionally, the Vandals participated in the 2016 College Basketball Invitational.

Zac Claus coached Idaho the previous four seasons, posting one of the lowest win percentages (.241) in program history. He was fired after going 10-21 in 2022-23. The school has yet to hire his replacement.

The school’s alumni base includes Naismith Hall of Famer Gus Johnson, who played one season with the Vandals after transferring from Boise State. He averaged 19 points and 20.3 rebounds per game as a junior in 1962-63, leading the school to its best finish (20-6) in 36 years. Following the season, Johnson turned pro and was selected 10th overall by the Baltimore Bullets in 1963. His number is now retired by the school.
