CFL Week 14 Odds Preview: A Crazier Sequel To Labor Day?

Could High Scores and Upsets Continue This Week?

All Home Teams Favored Including… Edmonton?!

The Labor Day weekend was a high-scoring bonanza with a huge upset courtesy of Saskatchewan over Winnipeg. This week could have more of the same if the trend continues and if the CFL Week 14 odds are a foreshadowing. All four home teams, including the two-win Elks, are favored. The totals are relatively the same with Montreal-Toronto potentially producing another potent matchup.

CFL Week 13 Review: Labor Day Fireworks

When we previewed Week 13, we did bank on something nuts happening. Boy, did it more than deliver! The Roughriders edged the Blue Bombers in overtime to cash as +270 underdogs. And Edmonton, a +190 dog itself, was this close to upsetting Calgary and winning three straight games. Alas, the Stampeders scored 22 fourth-quarter points and won 35-31. But Edmonton still covered!

And while favorites Toronto and B.C. continued to climb the CFL team records by covering, they also contributed to what was all four games going over their totals. In fact, all but one game totaled 60+ points each. The one game that didn’t, B.C.-Montreal, still totaled 59 points and went over its opener of 45.5 by almost two touchdowns.

The CFL Week 14 odds are seemingly unaffected by this. The totals, except for Montreal-Toronto at 51.5, are under 50 points. And two teams that lost, Winnipeg and Edmonton, are favored as their games shift to their home stadiums. This could be a recipe for revenge for more upsets.

🏈 Hamilton Tiger-Cats vs Ottawa Redblacks 🏈

Day/Time:
Location: TD Place Stadium, Ottawa
Streaming: CFL+, CBS Sports Network

Ottawa returns from its bye as 2.5-point favorites for a chance to snap a five-game losing skid. Both it and Hamilton are plagued by injuries to their quarterbacks hence why the total of 47.5 is the lowest for the week. Their last meeting also produced a week-low 28 points in total (16-12). But this was the only game of Ottawa’s last seven that went under the total. The Redblacks have otherwise been blowing up CFL scores and it could continue in this one.

🏈 Montreal Alouettes vs Toronto Argonauts 🏈

Day/Time:
Location: BMO Field, Toronto

The “Double Blue” is expected to leave the Alouettes black and blue per the CFL Week 14 odds. The 10.5-point spread is the widest this week and Toronto is 3-1 against the spread (ATS) when favored by 10+ points. Returning to BMO Field, the Argos are unbeaten in five home games and are 5-1 ATS in its last six. The high total of 51.5 is warranted as five of Toronto’s last seven home games also went ‘over’.

🏈 Roughriders vs Blue Bombers 🏈

Day/Time:
Location: IG Field, Winnipeg

After the Labor Day Classic is the Banjo Bowl, which is the rematch between Saskatchewan and Winnipeg on the Bombers’ turf. Winnipeg has won six of the last seven Banjo Bowls and it has also won eight of its last nine games against Saskatchewan. Thus, the Bombers are 7.5-point favorites here. These meetings also tend to be low-scoring. Five of Winnipeg’s last six games hosting Saskatchewan went under the total (48.5 here).

🏈 Calgary Stampeders vs Edmonton Elks 🏈

Day/Time:
Location: The Brick Field at Commonwealth Stadium, Edmonton

Far and away from the CFL division leaders is the rematch between Calgary and Edmonton. The Elks would like to get the last one back as they nearly had the Stampeders. Edmonton is 4-2 ATS in its last six games and covering 1.5 points should mean the Elks need to get back to winning. The total, 48.5 here, has gone over in four of Edmonton’s last five home games.
