CFL Week 16 Odds Preview: Hosts Cooking Up More Upsets?

Three of Four Home Teams, Underdogs this Week

Toronto – Lone Favorite as Hosts for Week 16

Up north in the CFL, this is the league of upsets. Led by Edmonton, there have been some lucrative underdog bets in the last few weeks. And this week could be more of the same judging by the CFL Week 16 odds. All but one host, the league-leading Argonauts, are lined at underdog odds. This includes Edmonton who hosts BC at nearly triple the stake (+295).

CFL Week 15 Review: Dogs Making Money

As we were saying, the underdogs went 4-0 against the spread (ATS) last week with two winning outright. Both Edmonton and Hamilton went into enemy territory and prevailed. The former scored a win as a +135 underdog while the latter made backers plenty of loot at +250. Montreal and Ottawa fell just short on the moneyline. But they both covered their CFL odds

The underdogs did their damage on offense. Other than Montreal, the dogs all scored 29 or more points. This resulted in three of the four games going over their totals. In Ottawa’s case, its last five games have gone over the total. And for Edmonton, four of their last six. These two have been reliable in producing high CFL scores despite their records.

🏈 Roughriders vs Redblacks 🏈

Day/Time:
Record: Roughriders (6-7)/Redblacks (3-10)
Location: TD Place Stadium, Ottawa
Streaming: CFL+, CBS Sports Network

Saskatchewan and Ottawa have one thing in common: they are both down two quarterbacks and have porous defense. Saskatchewan has given up 117 points in its last three games while Ottawa has allowed 98. That’s why each of their last five games has gone over their totals. However, the CFL Week 16 odds have this matchup as the lowest-scoring game at 44.5. Ottawa is the 2.5-point underdog as it aims to snap a five-game skid.

🏈 Lions vs Elks 🏈

Day/Time:
Record: Lions (9-4)/Elks (4-10)
Location: The Brick Field at Commonwealth Stadium, Edmonton

Don’t look now, but the Elks are quickly climbing the CFL power rankings. Edmonton has won four of its last five games and is on a two-game winning streak at home. And yet, the Elks find themselves as 8.5-point underdogs against the Lions. BC is just 2-4 ATS in its last six games and quarterback Vernon Adams Jr. has been turnover-prone. With a total of 50.5, this is also expected to be the highest-scoring game of Week 16.

🏈 Alouettes vs Stampeders 🏈

Day/Time:
Record: Alouettes (6-7)/Stampeders (4-9)
Location: McMahon Stadium, Calgary

Calgary completes the trio of underdog hosts at +2.5 against Montreal. This is not the same Stampeders your older siblings used to cheer for. While Dave Dickenson is still the man in charge, the Stampeders are on pace for their worst record since 2004. The team is 4-1-1 ATS in its last six games but is also just 2-4 at home. The Als are not much better: just 1-4 ATS in their last five games.

🏈 Tiger-Cats vs Argonauts 🏈

Day/Time:
Record: Tiger-Cats (6-7)/Argonauts (11-1)
Location: The Brick Field at Commonwealth Stadium, Edmonton

The Argonauts remain wide favorites per the CFL Week 16 odds since this team just keeps winning. Toronto is also 11-3 ATS in its last 14 games going back to last season. Quarterback Chad Kelly is undefeated when he plays a full game this season and Toronto also averages the most points (34.1) and the best point differential (+146). Hamilton, on the other hand, has last five straight against Toronto. But the team is 4-1 ATS in its last five road games and is coming off a big upset over Winnipeg.
