Terzic Could Change Lineup for Second Leg
Borussia Dortmund had to dig deep for Saturday’s win at Borussia Monchengladbach in the Bundesliga. Marcel Sabitzer managed to score on a well taken left footed first half volley and converted on a penalty just a few minutes later. However, Gladbach scored on a corner before halftime. Things got worse for Dortmund as Karim Adeyemi got sent off in the 55th minute. With a man disadvantage for over half an hour, Dortmund managed to keep Gladbach out and grab an important 2-1 victory. Adeyemi will miss Dortmund’s next Bundesliga match but he’s available vs. Atletico.
Look for coach Edin Terzic to shake up Dortmund’s lineup a bit on Tuesday. Attacking midfielder Julian Brandt made a big impact when he came on as a sub last Wednesday and he could take Felix Nmecha’s place. Marco Reus and Jamie Bynoe-Gittens are other candidates to get more time. However, Haller, who scored last week vs. Atletico, went off on Saturday with a recurrence of a left ankle injury, which should keep him out of this one. Bynoe-Gittens also left Saturday’s match with an apparent back issue but he may recover in time.
Jadon Sancho missed Saturday’s match with an illness but could be available, while Ramy Bensebaini is out. Borussia Dortmund finished in first place in the Champions League standings in the Group of Death. They beat out PSG, AC Milan, and Newcastle to the Group F title and have shown they can get results with their backs against the wall. However, they have lost two of their last four home matches, in all competitions.
Atletico Complete Comeback vs Girona
Atletico Madrid made quite a lot of progress in their top-four bid in La Liga on Saturday but it didn’t initially seem that way. Hosting third-placed Girona, Atletico Madrid fell behind in the first few minutes of the match. Artem Dovbyk put Girona ahead but Antoine Griezmann managed to convert a penalty minutes later to equalize. After coming on for the injured Saul in the41st minute, Atleti’s Alvaro Morata provided an assist for Angel Correa just before halftime
Griezmann managed to double Atletico Madrid’s lead in the second half and the match finished 3-1. Diego Simeone started all of Morata, Axel Witsel, Marcos Llorente, Samuel Lino, Cesar Azpilicueta, and Jose Gimenez on the bench. All of them started midweek vs. Dortmund and are in contention for Tuesday’s match except for Lino. The Brazilian winger is suspended due to yellow card accumulation.
After coming off injured, Saul is now a doubt and Memphis Depay is also injured.
