Atletico Up and Down in Recent Weeks

Atletico Madrid didn’t have a game last weekend, as La Liga took a break for the Copa del Rey Final. The last time Atleti played in La Liga, they managed to grab a late winner at Villarreal. Axel Witsel opened up the scoring on a corner but Villarreal got a goal back through Alexander Sorloth. Deep into the second half, Cesar Azpilicueta set up substitute Saul Niguez, who passed the ball into the net with his left foot to give Atletico Madrid the win. With the victory, Diego Simeone’s side returned to the top four in La Liga.

Still, Atletico have struggled quite a bit as of late, with six losses in their last 11, in all competitions. Even so, the Champions League bracket is favorable for Atletico. They’re playing the team with the longest odds to go on and win the UCL, then they’ll avoid all of Arsenal, Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, and Manchester City in the Semifinal should they advance. In their last Champions League match, Atletico turned it around when they looked down and out.

Federico Dimarco scored first in the second leg of the Round of 16 to put Inter Milan ahead 2-0 on aggregate. Then, Antoine Griezmann responded within two minutes for Atletico and Memphis Depay came on as a sub to score the fixture equalizer. In penalties, Atletico keeper Jan Oblak saved two shots as Atletico advanced over the 2023 finalists. Griezmann has scored six UCL goals so far this season, which is tied for the competition lead. Depay allegedly left Atletico training early over the weekend, which may be cause for concern, while Thomas Lemar is also out.

Dortmund Winning Streak Comes to an End

Borussia Dortmund’s five-game winning streak came to an end on Saturday when they lost 1-0 to Stuttgart in the Bundesliga. Dortmund certainly had their chances but it just wasn’t the hosts’ day. Serhou Guirassy scored a second-half winner for Stuttgart and Nico Schlotterbeck missed a point-blank shot for Dortmund late on in the match. It was Dortmund’s third loss to Stuttgart this season overall and they dropped out of the Bundesliga top four as a result.

Niclas Fullkrug has also failed to score in any of his last eight appearances for the club. He has contributed to 22 goals this season, though, which is more than any other Dortmund player. Dortmund hasn’t lost any of their last six UCL games and impressively managed to win a group with PSG, Newcastle United, and AC Milan. Consistency has been an issue for Dortmund but the potential is clearly there.

In the Round of 16, Dortmund drew 1-1 in the first leg at PSV. Then, back at Dortmund, Jadon Sancho scored his second goal for BVB since returning on loan and Marco Reus sealed a 2-0 victory. Donyell Malen, who is Dortmund’s leading scorer this season, missed Saturday’s match and it’s unclear whether he’ll be available for Wednesday’s game. Defender Ramy Bensebaini is also injured at the moment.

Atletico Madrid vs Borussia Odds Analysis

Atletico Madrid did lose 3-0 at home to Barcelona last month but it was just their second home loss of the entire 2023-24 season. Meanwhile, Borussia Dortmund haven’t lost a road match since September and have won three straight away from home. That includes a 2-0 victory over Bayern Munich, which was their first at the Allianz for nearly a decade.

Still, the Atletico Madrid vs Dortmund odds currently list Atleti as a -125 favorite for this match. Atleti -0.5, -1 sits at +105 odds. Meanwhile, bettors can back Dortmund to win at +365 odds and a draw comes in at +255. While Atletico Madrid are -190 favorites to qualify for the Semifinal overall, Dortmund are certainly capable of surprising. They have enough attacking dynamism, with players like Sancho, Julian Brandt, and Karim Adeyemi, to worry Atletico.

Dortmund +0.5, +1 is priced at -125 odds and it would be huge for them if they’re able to avoid defeat here. Atletico’s main dangers are Griezmann and Alvaro Morata, who have 11 UCL goals between them this season. Samuel Lino is also a threat on the wing for the home side. Dortmund have conceded just three times in their last six matches and under 2.5 goals stand at -115 odds here.
