2023 EPL Golden Glove Preview

Brazilian Keepers Lead the Field

2022-23 Winner David de Gea Leaves Man Utd

With 17 clean sheets, David de Gea won the 2022-2023 EPL Golden Glove. The Manchester United keeper’s triumph broke a four year run of Liverpool’s Alisson and Manchester City’s Ederson dominating the award. De Gea is on his way out of Old Trafford, and potentially the Premier League, which opens the door for a new winner. Let’s run through the 2023-24 Golden Glove odds as we get ready for the new season.

Ederson and Alisson Lead Field

Manchester City’s Ederson has won the EPL Golden Glove three out of the last four seasons. The award is given to the goalkeeper with the most shutouts over the course of the 38-game English Premier League schedule. It’s no surprise that Ederson is in the running once again as Manchester City have an excellent defense. That defense could get even better if City are able to wrap up a transfer for RB Leipzig’s Josko Gvardiol.

While Ederson only kept 11 clean sheets in 35 EPL games in 2022-23, the Brazilian keeper shows even odds to win a fourth career EPL Golden Glove. It’s not often that Ederson has too much to do, other than with the ball at his feet, but he’s reliable when called upon. He made some crucial saves in the Champions League final which sealed Manchester City’s treble.

Ederson’s Brazilian national teammate Alisson, is another strong contender for the award. The Liverpool man is actually Brazil’s number one and is a two-time Golden Glove winner. Liverpool had a down year for their lofty standards in 2022-23 and finished in fifth place. Alisson still managed 14 Premier League clean sheets, which was only bettered by De Gea.

To win the 2023 EPL Golden Glove, Alisson sits at +225 odds. He figures to be a popular bet, as Liverpool are expected to bounce back from a down year. He’s also got excellent defenders in front of him, like Andy Robertson, Ibrahima Konate and Virgil van Dijk.

Intriguing Picks

Along with Alisson and Nick Pope, Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsdale kept 14 clean sheets in the 2022-23 season. Arsenal led the EPL Standings for the vast majority of the season but blew their lead to Manchester City following William Saliba’s injury. If Saliba can stay healthy, Ramsdale will have a solid chance to win his first Golden Glove. Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal are also close to adding Jurrien Timber to a stacked backline. Ramsdale comes in at +1200 odds to end the season with the most clean sheets in the league.

Newcastle’s Nick Pope was by all accounts one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League last season. He helped Newcastle finish in the top four for the first time in 20 years as he put up the league’s best goals against average. Pope conceded just 0.88 goals per 90 minutes and had the league’s third-best save percentage. Newcastle are actively trying to bolster their backline this Summer and Pope displays +1200 Golden Glove odds.

David de Gea and Hugo Lloris are in similar positions. De Gea is widely expected to leave the Premier League after failing to agree a new contract with Manchester United. Inter Milan’s Andre Onana could replace De Gea and could be a popular 2023 EPL Golden Glove pick if and when he hits the odds board.

De Gea is listed at even odds to join any Saudi Pro League club which means his +1600 Golden Glove odds may not be such a good bet. Meanwhile, longtime Tottenham keeper Lloris (+2000) could also be on his way out of the EPL.

Two intriguing options this season are David Raya and Kepa Arrizabalaga. Raya could be in line to replace Lloris if he departs Tottenham. The Brentford goalie had the best save percentage in the EPL in 2022-23 and shows +2500 Golden Glove odds. Kepa (+2500) regained his starting spot at Chelsea in the middle of last season but the Blues are an unknown quantity heading into 2023-24.

Longshots

The England national team’s number one goalkeeper is still Jordan Pickford but his Everton have struggled over the last few seasons. The Toffees have narrowly avoided relegation in each of the last two seasons and have conceded too many goals for Pickford to be in the running for the award. Pickford enters the 2023-24 season at +3300 odds to win the Golden Glove but hasn’t kept more than 10 clean sheets since the 2018-19 season.

Emiliano Martinez won the Golden Glove at the FIFA World Cup but it figures to be more difficult to win the Premier League Golden Glove. Although, the Argentina keeper did have the third-best goals against average in the EPL for Aston Villa last season.

Unai Emery has transformed Villa since taking over in the middle of last season and that includes the defense. In 2022-23, Villa won 18 EPL fixtures, which is their joint-most in a 38-game EPL season. At +4000 odds to win the Golden Glove, Emi Martinez could be a popular sleeper pick.

Brighton were one of the surprise teams in the league last season. Under Roberto de Zerbi, the Seagulls qualified for European competition for the first time in club history. Now, they’ll look to build on their success but their goalkeeping situation is uncertain. One of Robert Sanchez and Jason Steele should start the season as Brighton’s number. Sanchez lost his spot to Steele in March but De Zerbi has praised Sanchez for improving since. Both Sanchez and Steele come in at +5000 odds.
