Head-to-Head

Heading into this Red Devils vs Spurs EPL showdown, Tottenham are unbeaten in the last two meetings. Last August, Spurs picked up a 2-0 victory over Manchester United as a Pape Matar Sarr goal and a Lisandro Martinez own goal made the difference. However, Tottenham have lost their last two matches at Old Trafford and have won just one of their previous six matches vs. Manchester United overall. United have typically been the better soccer betting pick in this fixture but all bets are off given the Red Devils’ form.

United’s Frontline Underperforming

Manchester United went on the road to Wigan in the FA Cup third round on Monday. Diogo Dalot opened the scoring with a curled shot into the bottom right corner. United captain Bruno Fernandes won a second-half penalty, which he ended up converting. United came away with a 2-0 win, which is just their second in their last seven matches, in all competitions. With a 10-1-9 record in the Premier League, Erik ten Hag’s United are in eighth place in the EPL standings.

On Sunday, the Red Devils will have their starting goalkeeper, though. Andre Onana has opted to play on Sunday instead of preparing for the Africa Cup of Nations with Cameroon. Following the match, he’ll join up with Cameroon but is unlikely to play in Monday’s AFCON opener vs. Guinea. United midfielder Sofyan Amrabat is out on international duty with Morocco. Meanwhile, Luke Shaw and Anthony Martial are doubtful, and Harry Maguire, Tyrell Malacia, and Mason Mount are out.

Casemiro and Lisandro Martinez have both returned to full training following long-term injuries. It remains to be seen whether they’ll play a part in Sunday’s match. United’s biggest problem this season has been creating chances and scoring goals, as their forwards have underperformed. Midfielder Scott McTominay is currently their leading goal scorer in the EPL this season, with five goals. Marcus Rashford scored 17 goals last season, but he’s managed just three so far. Rasmus Hojlund has also found the net just once in the EPL in his first season in United colors.

Tottenham Active in January Transfer Window

Like Manchester United, Tottenham managed to pick up a win in the FA Cup third round. Spurs defeated fellow Premier League side Burnley last Friday by a 1-0 scoreline. Tottenham right back Pedro Porro scored an absolute screamer for the game’s only goal. Richarlison led the line for Spurs in the match but couldn’t make the most of his chances. The Brazilian international has been better for Spurs in his second campaign but Tottenham have decided to bring in a reinforcement.

Tottenham completed a move for RB Leipzig and former Chelsea striker Timo Werner on loan this week. Werner is not known for his finishing ability, but his pace and positioning are top-notch. Genoa center back Radu Dragusin is also close to completing a move to Tottenham. Currently, Son Heung-min ranks third in the Premier League stats with 12 goals this season. However, he’s out for at least the next few weeks with South Korea at the AFC Asian Cup.

Midfielders Pape Matar Sarr and Yves Bissouma are also away on international duty. Meanwhile, Cristian Romero, James Maddison, Manor Solomon, and Ivan Perisic are out injured. It wouldn’t be surprising if Werner makes his Spurs debut here, while Tottenham are still waiting to complete the Dragusin deal. Spurs are just one point behind their rivals Arsenal, who are in fourth place, and they’re in the thick of the Champions League race.

Match Analysis & Odds

For Sunday’s Red Devils vs Spurs EPL showdown, Manchester United are +110 favorites, while visitors Tottenham are +200 underdogs. Tottenham are going for their first-ever season sweep of Man United in the Premier League era, which would represent a significant milestone for Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou. Tottenham have scored at least two goals in each of their last five Premier League matches and play a high-risk, high-reward style.

Up to this point in the season, Man United have a highly disappointing -5 goal difference in the Premier League. Their tactics under Ten Hag have been hard to pin down, as they often don’t play as a cohesive unit. Still, they hold a 6-4 record at Old Trafford in the Premier League this season. United also have the fewest draws in the league, with just one through 20 matches. Here, a draw displays +295 odds, as neither team would be too disappointed with a point.

Bettors should note that no EPL team’s matches have averaged more goals than Tottenham’s this season. Spurs matches have finished with an average of 3.55 goals per game, and the over/under goal total for this match is three. Over three goals show -140 odds, as both teams are expected to get on the scoresheet in this one.
