EFL Cup: Chelsea vs Newcastle Quarter-finals Odds & Preview
Magpies Head to London Midweek

Both Sides Coming off Weekend Wins
Last week, Newcastle fell 2-1 to AC Milan in their Champions League group stage finale. The result meant they crashed out of the UCL in their first appearance in 20 years. Still, Newcastle can find cup glory this season, as they head to Chelsea in the EFL Cup Quarter-finals on Tuesday. Chelsea head into this match having defeated Sheffield United 2-0 on Saturday. Newcastle also picked up a 3-0 win vs. Fulham on Saturday to break a two-game EPL losing streak. With both sides coming off wins, we’ll take a look at the EFL Cup Chelsea vs. Newcastle Quarter-finals odds.

Head-to-Head
Under a month ago, an injury-stricken Newcastle comprehensively defeated Chelsea 4-1 in the Premier League. The Magpies went into the match as +145 soccer betting favorites and they’re now unbeaten in their last three matches vs. Chelsea. Last season, Newcastle defeated Chelsea 1-0 at home and these sides drew 1-1 at Stamford Bridge. Newcastle haven’t won at Stamford Bridge since 2012, though.
Chelsea’s Best Opportunity for Silverware
Chelsea have played three EFL Cup games so far during this campaign. In the second round, back in August, they took down AFC Wimbledon 2-1. That set up a meeting with fellow Premier League side Brighton, who Chelsea ended up beating 1-0 on a Nicolas Jackson goal. In the round of 16, Chelsea fully deserved their 2-0 victory over Blackburn Rovers. Now, they’ll host Newcastle in Tuesday’s Quarter-finals matchup.
Mauricio Pochettino’s Blues have had an up and down start to the 2023-24 campaign. It’s been a challenge to integrate all of the new signings, injuries have hampered the squad and their play has been inconsistent. Chelsea have won just six of their 12 games at Stamford Bridge, in all competitions. However, they have managed draws vs. Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester City. Over the weekend, Chelsea defeated newly promoted Sheffield United 2-0 as Cole Palmer scored and assisted on Jackson’s goal. Sheffield United finished in second place in the EFL Championship table last season but they slumped to their 13th defeat of the season.
For Tuesday’s match, Pochettino will have a number of players out including goalkeeper Robert Sanchez, defenders Reece James, Wesley Fofana, Trevoh Chalobah, Marc Cucurella and Ben Chilwell. Noni Madueke and Romeo Lavia are also expected to be sidelined for this one. Regardless, this competition undoubtedly marks Chelsea’s best chance to win silverware this season.
Injuries Still Piling Up for Newcastle
Newcastle bounced back from their midweek Champions League disappointment with a 3-0 win over ten-man Fulham on Saturday. Joelinton and Fabian Schar went off injured in the first half, adding to Eddie Howe’s injury crisis. Joelinton’s replacement, Lewis Miley, ending up scoring Newcastle’s opening goal in the match. It was Miley’s first-ever Newcastle goal and the 17-year old midfielder has burst onto the scene over the last couple of months.
Miguel Almiron and Dan Burn added insurance goals for the Magpies as they broke a three-game losing streak, in all competitions. Newcastle have already had quite a difficult schedule in the EFL Cup. So far, they’ve faced Manchester City and Manchester United. In September’s third round, Alexander Isak scored the game’s only goal vs. City. Chelsea vs. Newcastle Quarter-finals
At Old Trafford, in the round of 16, the Magpies battered Man United, 3-0. Heading into this Chelsea vs. Newcastle Quarter-finals matchup, Isak’s status is uncertain, along with Joelinton and Fabian Schar. Bettors can also expect Nick Pope, Joe Willock, Jacob Murphy, Matt Targett, Elliot Anderson and Harvey Barnes to miss this one. If Isak can’t go, expect Callum Wilson to lead the line once again.
Match Analysis & Odds
Despite Chelsea’s inconsistency in the 2023-24 campaign, they do enter this match as -125 favorites. At their best, the Blues can compete with anyone but it will take a big effort to take down Newcastle here. The Magpies advanced to last season’s EFL Cup final and have already knocked out the defending champions and defending EPL champions.
The Chelsea vs. Newcastle Quarter-finals odds price an injury-laden Newcastle side as +320 moneyline underdogs. Newcastle +0.5, +1 sits at -120 odds as they look to get their third straight shutout win in the EFL Cup. It is worth noting that the Magpies have only won two of their 12 road matches this season. They’re currently on a five-game road winless run.
Extra time in the event of a draw isn’t played until the second leg of the Semi-finals. A draw here would mean the match goes directly into a penalty shootout. With Sanchez out for Chelsea, the inexperienced Djordje Petrovic will likely start in goal once again. A draw is priced at +275 odds, while both over and under 2.5, 3 goals display -115 odds.
