Brest Blow Lead at Lyon

Brest trailed heading into halftime of Sunday’s Ligue 1 match at Lyon. However, Romain Del Castillo put in a brilliant individual performance as Brest went up 3-1 by the 67th minute. The former Lyon man sent in a free kick that Steve Mounie headed in to equalize. Del Castillo then scored on a free kick in the 64th minute and completed his brace three minutes later. Lyon weren’t done yet, though, as they scored twice before Nicolas Tagliafico and Pierre Lees-Melou were sent off for Lyon and Brest, respectively.

Deep into stoppage time, Lyon earned a penalty, which Ainsley Maitland-Niles converted to give them a 4-3 comeback win. It was a disappointing result for Brest, given their two-goal lead and they’ll feel it was unjust that Lees-Melou received a second yellow card. The midfielder has been one of their most consistent performers this season and will be suspended for Sunday’s game. The goal for Brest is finishing in the top three places in the Ligue 1 standings. They’ve never before played in UEFA competition and getting to the Champions League would be a significant achievement.

This season, Del Castillo leads Brest in both goals and assists, with eight of each. He is joint-leader in Ligue 1 in assists at the moment. Eric Roy has done an excellent job as Stade Brestois coach and they’ve compiled an 8-5-1 record at home this season. Their only French Ligue 1 home loss was vs. PSG in October and they’ve won three of their last four at the Stade Francis Le Ble.

Monaco Unbeaten for Two Months

AS Monaco didn’t play a match last weekend. Their Ligue 1 match vs. Lille was postponed because Les Dogues are playing in the UEFA Europa Conference League Quarter-Final on Thursday. Meanwhile, Monaco missed out on European qualification entirely last season and are desperately trying to get back. They’ve had a solid season so far and have won their last two matches.

Adi Hutter’s side haven’t lost for two months and Wissam Ben Yedder is fifth on the list of Ligue 1 top scorers, with 11 goals. However, Ben Yedder hasn’t found the net in any of his last seven Ligue 1 games. Maghnes Akliouche has managed to get on the scoresheet in two straight matches. The 22-year old midfielder scored the game’s only goal in a 1-0 win over Rennes a couple of weekends ago.

This season, only PSG have scored more Ligue 1 goals than Monaco. Monaco’s problem has been that they’ve conceded goals at a league average rate but they have kept three shutouts in their last five games. Monaco will be without a few defenders on Sunday, though. Thilo Kehrer is suspended, while Ismail Jakobs, Caio Henrique and Guillermo Maripan are injured.
