Can Reynolds Shake the Rust After Missing 11 Games?

The Pittsburgh Pirates have had their share of top-notch outfielders over the years with Barry Bonds and Andy Van Slyke being teammates on Pirates teams that competed for the National League pennants and more recently, Andrew McCutchen being a highly productive player.

Now the outfield putting up numbers on an annual basis is 28-year-old Bryan Reynolds as Bryan Reynolds’ stats have been impressive. Reynolds debuted in 2019 and naturally has been the subject of trade rumors with the Pirates making a habit of trading away top players.

Reynolds is under contract through the 2030 MLB season with a team option for the 2031 season. Will he still be with the Pirates when the contract nears its completion?

Reynolds is hitting .271 with eight home runs and 40 RBIs in 70 games so far this season for the Pirates.

Reynolds Getting Noticed

Beginning with Reynolds finishing fourth in the National League Rookie of the Year voting in 2019, Reynolds has been one of the most reliable outfielders in baseball with Bryan Reynolds’ stats making him a key piece of the perpetually rebuilding Pirates.

He wasted little time making his presence felt as he hit .314 in 134 games as a rookie with 37 doubles, 16 home runs and 68 RBIs. He was especially productive against right-handed pitching with a .334 batting average with 42 of his 116 hits going for extra bases.

Two years later, he hit .302 with 93 runs, 90 RBIs, 35 doubles and 24 home runs to earn a spot in the MLB All-Star Game and finish 11th in the National League MVP voting. He went from batting .264 versus lefties as a rookie to .325 in year No. 3.

Although he hit a career-high 27 home runs the following season, his average dropped to .262 in 145 games. When looking at Bryan Reynolds’ stats that season, he hit .194 in April and .224 in May to getting the average up to .264 was a worthwhile accomplishment.

Reynolds has already missed 14 games this season. If you factor his stats over 148 games, he would finish with 80 runs, 152 hits, a career-high 42 doubles, six triples, 17 home runs and 85 RBIs. He has already established a career-high with eight stolen bases this season.

Reynolds doesn’t figure to be among the home run leaders in mlb, he is more likely to pile up the doubles and hit 20-29 home runs and there is nothing wrong with that, especially for a player with a .280 career batting average.

More Than Just a Hitter

When it comes to analytics, his success isn’t limited to his trips to the plate.

According to the Baseball Reference database, he also gets it done defensively.

His range factor of 2.28 is over the MLB average for an outfielder of 2.10. When he plays center field, the number jumps to 2.42 with the league average being 2.20 and in left field, he has a 2.05 range factor with the league average being 1.83.

He has 15 assists and 12 errors in the more than 500 games he has played in the outfield.

Something to Play For?

In past years, the Pirates’ playoff hopes seemed to be over almost before the season started. However, Pittsburgh was a surprise leader in the National League Central Division for a stretch and even with a 39-44 record,

Pittsburgh is just six games out of first place in the MLB division standings. The Pirates have already defied the MLB predictions and now that Reynolds is back in the lineup, perhaps more wins are coming.

Reynolds has put up some pretty big numbers after the All-Star break in previous seasons, so perhaps he can help the Pirates make a run at a division title in 2023.

That could also keep him around because if the Pirates were 10-15 games out of playoff contention, it is highly likely that his name would be linked with a team like the New York Yankees that needs some help in the batting order.

Pirates Get a Draft-Day Bargain

Reynolds was the 59th overall pick in the 2016 MLB Draft out of Vanderbilt. None of the players taken ahead of him had a higher Wins over Replacement mark than Reynolds as he comes in at 14.8.

The only one of the 41 players taken in the first round with a WAR over 10 is Los Angeles Dodgers catcher Will Smith. It should be noted that two players taken shortly after Reynolds have surpassed his WAR total.
New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso, the No. 64 pick out of Florida, has a 15.9. Just is just behind Toronto Blue Jays shortstop Bo Bichette’s 16.3 WAR.

Ten position players taken ahead of Reynolds have yet to make it to the majors as the second-round selection of Reynolds continues to look like a brilliant move with each passing season.
