Giants vs Dodgers Lines: Solid Rivalry Resumes in LA

Dodgers and Paxton Big Favorites in Opener

One of MLB‘s best rivalries resumes Monday in Los Angeles when the Giants visit the Dodgers to open a three-game series. James Paxton will make his debut for Los Angeles, while Keaton Winn gets the start for San Francisco.

The Giants vs Dodgers lines see Los Angeles as huge -210 favorites in the opener with a total of 8.5 (over -115).

The Giants are 2-2 on the season after splitting their four games with San Diego. The Dodgers are 4-2 after splitting two games in South Korea with San Diego and taking three of four from the Cardinals. Los Angeles went 7-6 against San Francisco last season.

The Dodgers were favored in all 13 games, and the MLB predictions could see the same this year.

Monday’s Game

Winn is making just his sixth career start in this one, having spent some time with the Giants in June before being a September call-up. He faced the Dodgers once, allowing six runs in 5 1/3 innings. His ERA was 4.68, although the game against Los Angeles saw his ERA climb from 3.89 to 4.68.

The Dodgers will counter with Paxton, who didn’t have a great season last year after missing all of 2022 and all but one game of 2021. Paxton underwent Tommy John surgery and started the 2023 season pitching well for Boston, but faltered down the stretch.

He signed a one-year deal with the Dodgers and was average in spring training. His health is a concern, but he showed what he could do last year, both good and bad.

The Giants were 28-20 against left-handed starters last year despite being outscored 3.9-4.3. San Francisco was just 18-30 in totals when facing a lefty.

The MLB scores and odds will see the Dodgers -200 or higher quite a bit this season. It’s hard to argue against that, although there are still some question marks surrounding Paxton.

The Giants vs Dodgers lines make this one hard to play. Laying -210 isn’t ideal, but favorites of -200 or more are off to a 5-1 start this season. The Dodgers are 2-1 in that role this season. If you have to play this one, there’s a little better value in the over than on Los Angeles.

Tuesday’s Game

San Francisco hasn’t officially named its starter for this game, although it should be Logan Webb. Webb has been one of the best pitchers in baseball over the last three seasons, and the Giants are 7-7 against the Dodgers when he starts. San Francisco has gone 55-39 when Webb starts the previous three years and 12-17 as an underdog.

The Dodgers will counter with Tyler Glasnow, who has been solid in a pair of starts and in spring training. Glasnow will get the run support he didn’t get in Tampa Bay or Pittsburgh, so he should have his best season. Los Angeles has won his first two starts of the year.

Webb has been a +150 or more underdog 11 times in his career, with five of those coming against the Dodgers. The Giants have gone 3-2 in those games. This is a different Dodgers team, however, and a quick look at the box scores shows this could be the highest-scoring team in recent years. It’s going to be tough to go against Los Angeles unless they become priced too high.

The total might be the way to look in this one. The Dodgers‘ offense should ensure the number is 7 to 7.5 and the under could is worth a good look.

Wednesday’s Game

It’s the same situation here for the Giants, who officially haven’t named their starter, but Kyle Harrison should be on the mound. Harrison has pitched well in limited duty for San Francisco. He started seven games for the Giants last year and threw well in his first start this year. Harrison allowed two solo home runs in six innings against the Padres in an 8-3 San Francisco win.

The Dodgers will send Bobby Miller to the mound and he was strong in his first start of the year. Miller allowed two hits and recorded 11 strikeouts in six innings against St. Louis. The Dodgers were 15-8 when he started last year, so he’s gotten the job done for Los Angeles.

The Giants vs Dodgers lines are going to see Miller as huge favorites in this game. The Dodgers should win, although it’s a question of what type of odds you want to lay in the game. This is another case where the under might be the way to look in this game.
