John Walls Stats: Former No. 1 Pick Displayed Flashes of Old Self

Wall Averaged 11.4 points, 5.2 Assists Before Year-Ending Injury

After missing the entire 2021-22 NBA season, former No. 1 pick John Wall showed glimpses of his former self last year with the Los Angeles Clippers. Playing in a reduced role off the bench, Wall — who had signed a two-year, $13.2 million contract — averaged 11.4 points and 5.2 assists.

The 32-year-old Wall was very much a fixture in Tyronn Lue’s rotation until Jan. 13, when he injured his abdomen in a 115-103 loss to the Denver Nuggets. Wall didn’t appear in another game all season.

At the February trade deadline, Wall was shipped to the Houston Rockets as a three-team deal. Houston then waived him shortly after, officially making him a free agent.

Is there still a market for the former five-time NBA All-Star? A breakdown of John Walls’ stats may show what he’s worth.

Usage Down

To accurately assess John Walls’ stats, you must understand his role. Last season, Wall’s first time primarily coming off the bench, he averaged 22.2 minutes. That ranked ninth on the Clippers, though Wall remained an important part of the rotation until his injury.

For his career, Wall’s averaged 34.9 minutes. His previous low was 32.2, his prior season in Houston when he started 40 games.

Prime Distributor

Amidst injuries, Wall remains a prime facilitator. He averaged 5.2 assists last season, second on the Clippers behind Russell Westbrook’s 7.6. Again, that was a career-low for Wall, who averaged 10.0 or more three straight seasons from 2014-17. But it came in a much-lesser role.

Bucket-Getter

Wall shot 40.8% from the field and 30.3% on 3-point attempts as a Clipper, putting him on par with his career marks of 43% and 32.2%. In that sense, Wall was still an efficient scorer, though underlying metrics show he was nearly twice as effective in catch-and-shoot scenarios than in pull-up opportunities.

He averaged 11.4 points, second among Los Angeles’ primary reserves behind guard Norman Powell (17.0). His season-high was 26 points, set Nov. 30 in a 125-112 loss to Utah. Five days earlier, he scored 23 in a 114-104 defeat to Utah, per NBA scores.

Net Negative

Wall registered a team-worst net rating of minus-9.2, indicating the Clippers were worse off with him on the floor. Obviously, Wall wasn’t entirely to blame. However, it’s no wonder Los Angeles decided to move on from the oft-injured veteran in hopes of finding a more reliable fit. It’s worth noting, he averaged 2.4 turnovers per game.

John Walls’ stats from 2022-23: 34 games (3 starts), 22.2 min, 40.7% FG, 30.3% 3, 68.1% FT, 2.7 REB, 5.2 AST, 0.8 STL, 2.4 TO, 11.4 PTS
