The backup running back just took Kenneth Gainwell’s job as he ran all over Minnesota’s paper defense on Thursday Night. D’Andre Swift’s player stats were to the tune of 175 rushing yards and a touchdown. He earns one of our “Player of the Week” spots as he looks to continue flourishing under this Eagles offense.

Eagles Ride Swift Past Vikings on ‘TNF’

Gainwell’s loss became Swift’s gain as the running back made the most of his opportunity on Thursday. With Gainwell out with a rib injury, the Eagles relied on Swift to carry the load. And he did more than just that as he rushed for 175 yards on 28 carries and a fourth-quarter touchdown.

This mark set a new career high for Swift, who ironically set his previous one of 144 against his current team last year (144 yards). Swift averaged 6.25 yards per carry and had a 43-yard run that culminated in a touchdown in the fourth. That was the game-clinching run and all but cemented his place with the team.

However, Philadelphia failed to cover the NFL spread thanks to a pointless touchdown from the Vikings (thanks a lot, defense). Philadelphia was -6 and the unfortunate TD forced a push with a final score of 34-28.

But Swift is going to eat after that performance. Even if the Eagles’ coaching staff is set on Gainwell as their main guy, Swift will continue to get carries. The former Lion could be in for a career season as Philly is among the NFL leaders in running the ball.

Swift came to the Eagles via a trade with Detroit: the Eagles traded a 2025 fourth-round pick for him including a swap of 2023 seventh-round picks. D’Andre Swift’s player stats were already promising with his old team and he did cook Philadelphia early last year. General manager Howie Roseman did not forget that performance and shrewdly acquired him.

Swift is into his fourth NFL season but is still just 24 years old. He’s got a lot left to burn so fans can expect him to stay prolific. Should he continue to get opportunities, he’ll help Philadelphia stay atop the NFL standings.

If there is one part that could limit D’Andre Swift’s player stats, it’s his lack of usage in the passing game. Swift is a capable receiver from the backfield. He totaled 1,198 receiving yards and seven touchdowns in three seasons with Detroit. But so far, Philadelphia has not used him in that way. Still, given his talents, Swift could still factor into the passing game if the Eagles’ offense leans on it.
