Offensive Line Injuries A Concern For New England Heading into Early AFC East Test

Tyreek Hill Looks To Build On Monster Season-Opening Effort for Miami Dolphins

Together again. The Miami Dolphins and New England Patriots are set to meet in the regular season for the 113th time with Miami holding the 59-53 advantage. Keep that in mind when looking at the Dolphins vs Patriots betting odds.

Miami hasn’t won often in New England in recent years. Still, the visiting Dolphins are listed as the 3-point favorites according to the NFL point spreads. The Dolphins haven’t been favored in New England since 2002 and haven’t won in New England when listed as the favorite since 2000.

New England snapped a four-game losing streak to Miami the last time out.

In the season opener, Miami won a wild affair with the Los Angeles Chargers 36-34 on a late touchdown pass from Tua Tagovailoa to Tyreek Hill as a three-point underdog on the road while the Patriots fell to Philadelphia 25-20. The Patriots were 3.5-point underdogs in that game.

Miami is leading the way in the AFC East when it comes to the NFL division leaders.

When it comes to the NFL team defense stats, New England is ninth in the NFL with an average of 251 yards allowed with Miami 31st after giving up 433 yards in Week 1.

Miami is tied with Buffalo at +140 in the odds to win the AFC East Division with New England picked to finish last with +900 odds.

Not Bad for Openers

Tagovailoa found the perfect way for people to stop discussing his injury-riddled past.

The Miami quarterback, who missed four games a season ago, picked apart the Chargers secondary to the tune of 466 yards in the season opener. Perhaps just as important was that he wasn’t sacked in the game. Keep that in mind when looking at the Dolphins vs Patriots betting odds.

When given time to find his dynamic receivers, the Dolphins can be close to impossible to stop.

Big Test For Young Secondary

Six of the eight cornerbacks on the New England roster are 25 or younger and that includes 21-year-old rookie Christian Gonzalez.

It is time to see how ready they are to face a player who can wreck any defensive game plan as Miami receiver Tyreek Hill had more than 200 receiving yards in the season opener.

Hill was held under 100 receiving yards in each of the last two meetings and New England will look to repeat that feat on Sunday night. That could be a key when it comes to the Dolphins vs Patriots betting odds.

Miami was 10-8 against the spread last season and 6-3 after a win.

Last Meeting

New England took the lead on Kyle Dugger’s 39-yard interception return for a touchdown and never gave it back in a 23-21 win on Jan. 1 with New England favored by three points. A Mike Gesicki touchdown catch with 1:04 left kept the Patriots from covering.

Miami had won the previous four games and heads into this matchup having covered versus the Patriots in five straight games.

The home team is 5-1 in the last six meetings with four of the last six games going under the total.

Dolphins vs. Patriots Injury Update

Offensive tackle Terron Armstead (leg), cornerback Xavien Howard (thumb), and running back Devon Achane (shoulder) are questionable for Miami while safety Brandon Jones, running back Raheem Mostert, receiver Jaylen Waddle and offensive lineman Connor Williams are expected for play.

For New England, offensive linemen David Andrews (hamstring), Michael Onwenu (ankle), Cole Strange (knee) and Trent Brown (concussion), defensive back Jonathan Jones (ankle), and receiver DeVante Parker (knee) are all questionable.

Dolphins vs Patriots Betting Preview

Going into a game against a favored division rival with four of the top offensive linemen questionable to play is not ideal. Their absence could make for a difficult evening for Patriots quarterback Mac Jones.

New England failed to cover in three games during the 2022 season as the underdog at home. Miami was just 1-3 ATS as the road favorite.

Miami has covered in five of its last six games while the total has gone over in eight of the last 12 contests as well as in eight of the last nine road games. The total is currently at 46.5 for this matchup. Five of the last six meetings between New England and Miami would have fallen under that number.

New England has failed to cover in each of its last five games and has covered just once in the last five home games.

The Patriots are 12-2 in their last 14 home games against Miami. However, future Hall of Fame quarterback Tom Brady was leading the New England offense for most of those matchups.
