Detroit Cashes in Early Hype

Big expectations followed the Detroit Lions. So far, they look up to task. The Lions pulled off one of the biggest upsets in Week 1, beating the Kansas City Chiefs 21-20 in primetime last Thursday. Detroit, a 4.5-point underdog, grabbed the lead for good with 7:06 remaining on David Montgomery’s 8-yard touchdown run.

Now, the defending Super Bowl champions were missing a few significant pieces in tight end Travis Kelce (knee) and defensive tackle Chris Jones (contract holdout). Still, Detroit did an impressive job to shut down two-time NFL MVP Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs’ high-powered offense. The Lions returned an interception for a touchdown and held Kansas City to its fewest points since Week 9 of last season.

Can Detroit that maintain level of play? There’s no reason why not. The Lions have arrived. Oddsmakers seem to agree, pricing them a -125 favorite to win the NFC North. They added a new dimension to their offense this offseason in rookie first-rounder Jahmyr Gibbs, and the defense was already on the upswing thanks to Aidan Hutchinson, who was among the NFL sack leaders as a rookie with 9.5.

Dan Campbell, a +700 favorite for NFL Coach of the Year, has pushed all the right buttons so far, raising optimism around one of the NFL’s most beleaguered franchises. But with the spotlight now on, Detroit faces additional pressure to stay among the NFL division leaders.

Again, Detroit is a trendy pick at the moment. After one week, the Lions saw their NFC odds jump from +1000 to +700. They are still a longshot to win the Super Bowl, something they’ve never done, but even those odds have increased to +1600. Keep that in mind when assessing the Seahawks vs Lions odds.

Disappointing Opener Clouds Seattle’s Outlook

Was Week 1 just an aberration? Or do the Seattle Seahawks have legitimate concerns?

The Seahawks certainly didn’t provide much optimism, losing 30-13 at home to the Los Angeles Rams as a 5-point favorite. After leading 13-7 at halftime, the Seahawks were outscored 23-0 in the second half. Even worse, they mustered just 180 yards of total offense.

Projected for 8.5 wins (-105 Over, -115 Under), the Seahawks were supposed to contend again for the playoffs. They still very well could, but even after just one game, the road is a bit tougher now.

Whether they can get back on track will largely depend on Geno Smith, the reigning NFL Comeback Player of the Year. Smith looked relatively mortal against the Rams, passing for only 112 yards and a touchdown. The lack of big plays — Smith averaged 4.3 yards per attempt — was befuddling for an offense featuring DK Metcalf, Tyler Lockett and rookie first-rounder Jaxon Smith-Njigba.

Fortunately for Seattle, running back Kenneth Walker III appeared healthy after being slowed in practice last week with a groin injury. Walker III rushed 12 times for a team-high 64 yards and also caught four passes.

Handicapping the Game

Bettors continue to buy into Detroit, as the spread has doubled from -3 to -6 since Sunday. The Seahawks vs Lions odds make sense too, as the Lions come home well-rested after an exhilarating win over Kansas City. The Lions looked as advertised in shutting down the defending Super Bowl champs. Campbell’s squad will face some bouts of adversity this season, but these aren’t your father’s Lions. Detroit is for real.

While Week 1 is open ripe for overreactions, it’s hard to discount what’s happening in Detroit. Thus, look for the Lions to cover at home.
