WTA Rothesay International Odds: Can Kvitova Win Eastbourne Again?

Wide Open Field for Final Wimbledon Tune-Up Without Swiatek or Sabalenka

Plenty of Eyes On the Young Great Britain Products in Eastbourne Field

If the events in Berlin when Aryna Sabalenka and Coco Gauff were both upset on the same day, it could be an unpredictable ride to crown a champion in Eastbourne. Keep an eye on the WTA Rothesay International Odds as defending champion Petra Kvitova could face a tough road to be the first back-to-back women’s champion since 2007.

The tournament shouldn’t be confused with Rothesay Classic. Barbora Krejcikova is the top seed in that event.

When looking at the WTA odds, Elena Rybakina is tied with Swiatek and Sabalenka at +400 in the Wimbledon women’s singles outrights. Ons Jabeur is priced at +1000 followed by Coco Gauff at +1400 and Kvitova at +2000.

Neither No. 1 Iga Swiatek nor No. 2 Arnya Sabalenka is planning to be a part of the Eastbourne field and that could make for a wild week of tennis as competitors look to prepare for Wimbledon.

Since Chanda Rubin topped Anastasia Myskina and Conchita Martinez to win the titles in 2002 and 2003, only 2013 finalist Jamie Hampton and 2014 champion Madison Keys have represented the United States in an Eastbourne women’s singles final.

The 32-player field is hurt a bit by having an event in Bad Homburg, Germany at the same time as part of the WTA schedule that gives as many players as possible some matches leading into the upcoming Grand Slam tournament. The tournament’s main draw will begin on Monday.

Ready for A Repeat?

No player has won back-to-back titles at Eastbourne since Justine Henin in 2006 and 2007. Karolina Pliskova did win two titles in three years and make it into three finals from 2016-2019.

That is what is facing Petra Kvitova. Kvitova lost just one set on her way to her first title at Eastbourne. With that impressive run as well as her success playing on grass courts, the WTA Rothesay International odds will be favorable for the popular Kvitova.

Her impressive run did not translate into an extended stay at Wimbledon as the two-time Wimbledon champion fell in the third round.

Since making it to the Australian Open quarterfinals and French Open semifinals in 2020, Kvitova has lost in the first round at Grand Slams three times, fell in the second round four times. Her best showings since the 2020 French Open were fourth-round appearances at the US Open in 2020 and 2022.

The official field has yet to be announced. With Wimbledon up next, late withdrawals are always possible as no player is going to risk making noise at a Grand Slam if they are facing injury concerns at a tune-up tournament. Two of the top six seeds withdrew in the 2022 Eastbourne event.

Americans Jessica Pegula and Coco Gauff, Elena Rybakina and Ons Jabeur are players worth keeping an eye on.

Locals Ready to Surprise?

No player from Great Britain has won this tournament since Virginia Wade topped Billie Jean King in three sets in the 1975 final. Wade lost to Chris Evert in the 1976 final. Since then, no local products have reached the women’s singles title match in Eastbourne.

The homegrown players in the field will need to advance through the draw as unseeded players. It was a strong effort by the representatives from Great Britain. They will draw plenty of fan support. However, that won’t translate into the best WTA Rothesay International odds.

Katie Boulter, Jodie Burrage and Harriet Dart received wildcards into the main draw in the 2022 event while Heather Watson got into the field as a lucky loser.

Burrage upset top-seeded Paula Badosa in the second round before being eliminated by Beatriz Haddad Maia in her next match. Boulter defeated Tereza Martincova and No. 4 seed Karolina Pliskova before falling the eventual champion Petra Kvitova 7-5 in the third set. Dart survived three three-set matches before her run ended in the quarterfinals to Kvitova.

Watson fell in a highly competitive first-round match to fellow lucky loser Rebecca Marino.

In the Nottingham event earlier this month, Boulter, Watson and Burrage all advanced to the semifinals. Boulter topped Burrage 6-3, 6-3 in the title match. If that happens in Eastbourne, that would be one amazing story as all of them rank outside the top 75. Boulter did move up 49 spots to No. 77 while Burrage went from No. 131 to No. 108.
