Max Holloway was already a UFC legend before stepping into the octagon against Justin Gaethje on Saturday. But his last-second knockout of Gaethje only added to his legacy in what Joe Rogan called the “greatest knockout of all-time.” The Max Holloway stats improved to 26-7 with his victory in the BMF title fight over Gaethje. It was the first time Holloway fought as a lightweight in five years. On the UFC 300 broadcast, Rogan said Holloway’s performance was masterful.

“Listen, Max Holloway is one of the greatest, if not the greatest featherweight of all time. And what you saw is that he’s one of the greatest fighters of all time, period. And he’s still 32. He’s in his prime right now. I think a lot of people forgot that. Those (Alexander) Volkanovski losses, I think a lot people said, ‘Ah, he’s done.’ But no, he’s better than ever. And he looked sensational.”

The UFC odds had Gaethje as a -155 favorite. Despite being comfortably ahead in the waning seconds of the match, Holloway wanted to slug it out at the end. He pointed to the center of the ring and both fighters went at it. It was Holloway who connected with an overhead right that sent Gaethje down. The fact many people thought Gaethje had too much offense for Holloway was another reason Rogan was so impressed.

“He looked so good,” Rogan said. “But it’s all about giving Max the time to prepare for lightweight. He looked thicker, he looked denser, he put muscle on, and he prepared for a terrifying fighter.”

The Max Holloway stats would look much better if not for the three losses to Volkanovski. Six of those seven losses have been by decision. The other loss was by submission.

Ilia Topuria Likely Next Opponent

The next bout on Holloway’s UFC schedule is looking like it will be featherweight champion Ilia Topuria. The two have been trading barbs on social media since Holloway defeated Gaethje. It’s a fight that makes sense, even though Holloway would like another crack at Conor McGregor.

Regardless of who he fights, it will be tough to earn as much as he did against Gaethje. UFC raised fight bonuses to $300,000 for the card and Holloway walked out with the “Performance of the Night” and “Fight of the Night” bonuses, earning him an additional $600,000 for the evening.

Holloway also climbed in the UFC standings for pound-for-pound fighter. He jumped up to No. 6 in the UFC rankings there, but got the shaft a bit from UFC in the lightweight rankings. He entered the picture ranked No. 9 in the 155-pound class. That’s well below Gaethje, who fell from No. 2 to No. 3 after his loss. Holloway did stay at No. 2 in the 145-pound weight class, however.

The Max Holloway stats suggest he’s a fighter who deserves a title shot and Topuria seems willing to give him one. It’s a fight that would draw plenty of attention and give Holloway a chance for some redemption after losing his three previous title fights.
