SV Darmstadt 98 Stats History
SV Darmstadt 98, also known as Darmstadt 98 and nicknnamed “Die Lilien,” is based in Darmstadt, Hesse, Germany. Founded on May 22, 1898, the club primarily participated in the lower leagues of German football at first. They were often in the second division from the 1950s through the 1970s.
One of the most prominent periods in the Darmstadt team stats was in the 1970s. In 1973, Darmstadt won their first second division title in the Regionalliga Sud. However, they didn’t manage to advance through the promotion rounds.
Darmstadt first earned promotion to the Bundesliga ahead of the 1978-79 season. Unfortunately, their first-ever Bundesliga season ended in relegation back to the second division.
After two more seasons in the second tier, they added a third second division title to the Darmstadt 98 team stats. Again, their stay in top flight was short and ended in relegation after the 1981-82 Bundesliga season. Darmstadt nearly returned to the Bundesliga in 1988 but lost the promotion/relegation playoff.
By the late 1990s, Darmstadt’s financial situation turned dire and they slipped into the third and fourth divisions. Financial problems persisted into the new millennium and they entered insolvency proceedings in 2008.
A friendly match vs. Bayern Munich and various donations helped Darmstadt pay off their debts. In 2011-12, Darmstadt returned to the third tier and Dirk Schuster was hired in 2012.
In 2013-14, Darmstadt finished in third and defeated Arminia Bielefeld in a playoff to return to the 2. Bundesliga for the first time in 21 years. With a second place finish in 2014-15, Schuster led Darmstadt to consecutive promotions and a return to the Bundesliga.
He also presided over Darmstadt’s best-ever league finish in 2015-16, when they finished 14th. He left for Augsburg in 2016 and Darmstadt were relegated in 2017. Six years later, Darmstadt finished in second in the 2. Bundesliga to return to the Bundesliga for a fifth season.
In 2022-23, Phillip Tietz led the Darmstadt team stats with 12 league goals. He departed for Augsburg over the Summer and replaced him with 6’5” forward Fraser Hornby.
Ahead of the 2023-24 season, the Bundesliga odds price Darmstadt as the joint-unlikeliest team to win the league. They come in at +200000 odds to win the league and +10000 odds to make the top four. Betting advice suggests Darmstadt could be a team to fade in certain matchups based on their Bundesliga history.
