Unión Deportiva Las Palmas Stats History
Unión Deportiva Las Palmas, commonly known as UD Las Palmas, is based in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Canary Islands, Spain. The club was founded on August 22, 1949 and their early years were primarily spent in regional leagues.
Gradually, they worked their way up the Spanish football pyramid. The club gained their first promotion to La Liga in the Las Palmas team stats in the 1951-1952 season. However, their stay was short-lived, and they were promptly relegated.
Emergence of Dominance in the 1960s and 1970s
The 1960s and 1970s marked a significant period of growth for UD Las Palmas. Under legendary coach, Josep “Pep” Juan, the club experienced a period of sustained success. In the 1968-1969 season, they secured their first-ever appearance in Copa del Rey final in the UD Las Palmas team stats. However, Athletic Bilbao narrowly defeated Las Palmas.
In the early 1970s, Las Palmas established themselves as a competitive force in La Liga and earned a reputation for their entertaining, attacking style of play. They finished as La Liga runners-up in the 1977-1978 season, their highest league finish to date.
Triumphs and Contemporary Challenges
One of the most iconic moments in Las Palmas history came during the 1980-1981 season, when they reached the semifinals of the UEFA Cup. They were eliminated by eventual champions Ipswich Town.
Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Las Palmas experienced fluctuations in La Liga standings, with multiple promotions and relegations. In more recent years, UD Las Palmas has continued to compete in the Spanish football hierarchy, featuring predominantly in the Segunda División.
They played in the second tier from 2018 until 2023, when they finished second and earned their third promotion to La Liga of the 21st century. Jonathan Viera, Marc Cardona and Sandro Ramirez finished joint-first in the 2022-23 Las Palmas team stats, with seven league goals.
Betting advice notes that Las Palmas had an excellent defense in 2022-23, conceding just 29 league goals. While they are known for defense, it’ll be much more difficult to keep clean sheets in La Liga. The 2023-24 La Liga odds actually price Las Palmas as the most likely team to go back down to the second tier, at -150.
