Overview of the Weber State Wildcats Standings

Last-Season Standings

The Weber State Wildcats had a successful 2021-2022 basketball season, finishing with an overall record of 21-11 and a conference record of 14-4. The team finished in second place in the Big Sky Conference standings, behind only Eastern Washington.

The Wildcats had several impressive wins throughout the season, including victories over conference opponents Montana and Montana State, as well as non-conference wins against Portland and Seattle. Their 14 conference wins were tied for the second-most in the conference, and they also had a +6.8 scoring margin in conference play.

Leading the way for the Wildcats was senior guard Isiah Brown, who averaged 19.4 points per game and was named the Big Sky Conference Player of the Year. Brown was a dominant force on the offensive end of the court, shooting 47.4% from the field and 39.6% from three-point range. He also contributed 4.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game.

Another key contributor for the Wildcats was junior forward Dillon Jones, who averaged 11.2 points and 5.7 rebounds per game. Jones was a versatile player who could score both inside and outside, shooting 48.8% from the field and 38.3% from three-point range.

Overall, the Wildcats had a balanced scoring attack, with six players averaging at least 7.5 points per game. They were also a strong defensive team, holding opponents to just 65.3 points per game, which ranked second in the conference.

In terms of national rankings, the Wildcats did not crack the AP Top 25 at any point during the season. However, they did receive votes in the poll on several occasions. They also finished the season ranked 146th in the NCAA‘s NET rankings.

The Wildcats’ season came to an end in the semifinals of the Big Sky Conference tournament, where they were defeated by Eastern Washington. Despite the disappointing end to the season, the Wildcats can take pride in their overall performance and the progress they made throughout the year. With several key players returning next season, they will look to build on their success and make a deeper run in the conference tournament.

Weber State Wildcats Basketball History

The Wildcats’ stats made for impressive reading during the 1970s, ’80s, and ’90s. They made the NCAA Tournament in 1979, 1995, and 1999, which was an incredible effort.

Having two Sweet 16 appearances (1969, 1972) is a testament to the school and they are one of the most successful teams to come out of the Big Sky Conference.

Former coach Dick Motta had excellent success in the 60s, culminating in a first-round appearance. They have had some excellent coaches since, including Neil McCarthy, Ron Abegglen, and Randy Rahe. However, Rahe was replaced by Eric Duft for the upcoming season following a 21-12 season.

The Weber State Wildcats’ stats had been a little inconsistent of late, including a 12-20 season in 2020 and a 13-17 record in 2015. However, they won the Big Sky title five times since 2007.

Their most recent NCAA Tournament appearance came in 2016 when losing to Xavier 71-53. Xavier was the #2 seed, so they weren’t too disappointed with the result.

They haven’t won at the tournament since beating North Carolina 76-74 in a huge upset in 1999. They were a touch unlucky not to progress further in the tournament after losing to Florida 82-74 in overtime.

With six tournament wins on their record, the Wildcats are one of the most successful Big Sky teams. They haven’t won the conference since 2016, which is worrying and it could explain the coaching change.

Famously, Damian Lillard spent three seasons with Weber State from 2008-2012. He would move on to the NBA where he continues to have an incredible career with the Portland Trail Blazers.

However, the history of the team can’t be overlooked and they will be well-favored to win the conference with NCAAB odds. There is some stiff competition, but the Weber State Wildcats standings don’t lie and they should be a force to be reckoned with.
