Real Sociedad in Poor Form

Despite dominating possession and having more chances, Real Sociedad fell 3-1 to Villarreal on Friday evening. Villarreal got on the scoresheet early, on a corner that Santi Comesaña headed in. Comesaña doubled Villarreal’s lead in the second half. Mikel Merino got a goal back for Sociedad but it was too little too late. To add insult to injury, Alexander Sorloth, who spent two years on loan at Real Sociedad scored in stoppage time to give Villarreal an insurance goal.

La Real have won just one of their last seven games, in all european competitions. The win was at Mallorca and they’ll still be feeling confident ahead of Tuesday’s second leg. In six previous fixtures in the Copa del Rey this season, Real Sociedad have conceded just one goal. La Real’s defense is typically strong and they conceded three goals on Friday for the first time since September.

Somewhat concerningly, Real Sociedad have conceded in four straight games overall. Still, the Copa del Rey final odds list Real Sociedad at a +200 price to win the title for the second time in five years. Heading into Tuesday’s match, star player Mikel Oyarzabal and defender Aritz Elustondo are listed as doubtful. Aihen Muñoz and Carlos Fernandez are out for the Txuri-Urdin.

Copa del Rey Bright Spot for Mallorca

Mallorca went on the road to Alaves in La Liga on Saturday. Alaves scored with their only shot on target of the match, as Carlos Benavidez put them ahead in the 76th minute. Mallorca pushed for an equalizer and they were rewarded for their efforts in the 88th minute. Matija Nastasic scored his second goal of the season and Mallorca left with a 1-1 draw.

In six Copa del Rey games so far, Mallorca have kept five clean sheets which is only one less than they’ve kept in La Liga all season. They also have more Copa del Rey victories (5) than La Liga wins (4) this season. Mallorca have only been victorious in one of their last six matches overall. They’re also just seven points ahead of the relegation zone in La Liga at the moment.

The issue for Mallorca this season has been creating chances and scoring. While they have a league average defense, they’ve found the net just 23 times in 26 La Liga games and failed to score in the first leg of the Copa del Rey Semifinal vs. Real Sociedad. However, Abdon Prats has scored six goals for Mallorca in the Copa del Rey this campaign and is joint-top scorer in the competition. Just defender Pablo Maffeo is out for Mallorca on Tuesday.

Real Sociedad vs Mallorca Match Analysis & Odds

This is undoubtedly Real Sociedad’s best chance for silverware this season, as they hold a two-goal deficit heading into the second leg of the Champions League round of 16 vs. PSG. They are the better team on paper and they’re playing at home with a potential Basque Derby final awaiting them if they win. Still, Mallorca have knocked out Girona in the Copa del Rey and have saved their best football for this competition.

Currently, the Real Sociedad vs Mallorca odds price Sociedad as -165 favorites to win the match and at -425 to advance. Meanwhile, Mallorca haven’t defeated La Real in San Sebastian for over 20 years. The visitors are +500 underdogs for Tuesday’s match, which corresponds to a 16.7 percent chance of victory. Mallorca show +265 odds to advance overall and a draw (+240) would result in extra time and potentially penalties.

It’d be a big boost for Sociedad if they get captain Mikel Oyarzabal back in time for this match. He’s led La Real this season with two goals in this competition. This is expected to be another low scoring match, with the over/under goal total set at two. Under two goals are currently priced at -120 odds for this second leg Copa del Rey Semifinal.
