Since Salernitana’s most recent promotion, in 2021, Juventus are 3-1-0 vs the Campania club. In the 2022-23 season, Salernitana nearly got a historic win in Turin but Leonardo Bonucci scored a late equalizer in a 2-2 match where three players got sent off.
In the reverse fixture, Dusan Vlahovic scored twice in a 3-0 Juventus victory. Salernitana’s first and only win over Juve was in 1999. This is the first-ever match between these sides on the Coppa Italia schedule and Salernitana have never defeated Juve in Turin.
Juventus: Title Challengers
Juventus closed out 2023 with an important 1-0 win over AS Roma in Serie A last Saturday. Adrien Rabiot scored the game’s only goal early in the second half as Dusan Vlahovic provided a creative backheeled assist. With the win, the Bianconeri moved within two points of leaders Inter Milan. Juventus seem to be the only title challengers to Inter Milan this season and the title race is certainly worth keeping tabs on.
Max Allegri’s side will put their Serie A ambitions on hold on Thursday when they host Salernitana in the Coppa Italia round of 16, though. It’s been quite a difficult season for Salernitana thus far. They’ve won just two of their first 18 Serie A games and have already replaced Paulo Sousa with legendary former striker Filippo Inzaghi. Inzaghi hasn’t been able to get Salernitana out of the relegation zone just yet but they did pick up four points in their last two matches of 2023.
Salernitana drew 2-2 vs AC Milan a couple of days before Christmas and defeated Verona 1-0 in their last match of the year. Promising midfielder Loum Tchaouna scored his first Serie A goal for Salernitana in the match. Coppa Italia games have also been bright sports for Salernitana, as they’ve won their first two. In August, they took down Ternana 1-0 and they demolished Sampdoria 4-0 in one of Inzaghi’s first matches as coach.
Tchaouna scored twice in the match vs Sampdoria as well and he’s one to watch on Thursday. Bettors should note that Salernitana striker Boulaye Dia is out with a hamstring injury. The Senegalese forward was Salernitana’s leading scorer in 2022-23 with 16 of their 48 league goals.
Goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa is doubtful with a shoulder issue and Benoit Costil has been filling in lately.Meanwhile, Veteran Antonio Candreva has been the main man this season for the Granata, as he’s scored four goals and provided four assists in the 2023-24 Serie A season.
