Arizona Needs to Overcome History

The Snakes have had a terrific season, exceeding most of the preseason expectations. Despite that success, Arizona still finds itself on the outside of the postseason (1 GB) as they start a 4-game series against their divisional nemesis who are hanging on to the top wild-card spot in the National League.

This season, the Diamondbacks have won 4 of the 7 meetings against the Giants, but the past tells us that Arizona has had more than its share of trouble against the G-Men since 2020. In that span, the D-backs are 18-37 (.327) -1547 units against San Francisco. That’s the most money lost for bettors against any Arizona opponent over the last four years. As a dog, the Diamondbacks are 14-30 (.318) -1127 units and 6-19 (.240) -1089 units as a road dog. MLB stats rarely tell the entire story, but it’s clear that the Giants should own the psychological edge.

With Ryne Nelson on the hill, there is some hope that the D-backs could start to reverse that mental edge with Arizona a perfect 2-0 this season when Nelson toes the rubber against San Francisco. In those starts, Nelson has allowed 10 hits, and five runs, in 11 â…” innings with a 3.86 era in his only two career starts against the Giants.

Overall, the Las Vegas area native is 10-14 (-253 units) in his two seasons in the bigs and 7-9 (+51 units) as an underdog. We continue our Diamondbacks vs Giants betting odds preview by switching our attention to the San Francisco Giants.

Giants Should Focus On Sweep

The MLB standings say the Giants are within striking distance of the first-place Los Angeles Dodgers (2 GB), but this weekend could be one that starts the process of crowing a division champion. While the Giants tussle with the Diamondbacks, the Dodgers start a 3-game series at home against the Oakland Athletics who are a league-worst 30-77.

Even a split with Arizona could result in losing ground if Los Angeles sweeps, putting a massive emphasis on at least taking three of the four games. Alex Cobb is set to start for the Giants after pitching six innings of shutout baseball against the Athletics six days ago.

The all-star has been terrific all season but does find himself in trouble at times giving up 115 hits in 106 innings in 2023, but these numbers have started to slightly improve over his last six starts with 33 hits allowed in 31 â…“ innings to go with a sparkling 2.87 era.

The Giants are 14-5 when Cobb starts, with 7 wins in his last 8 outings. With San Francisco averaging 4.47 runs per game for Cobb, our only concern is run support but the Giants scoring just eight runs over his last four starts. We conclude our Diamondbacks vs Giants betting odds preview with our game one selection.

Small Money Coming On Arizona

We only had a few hours to track wagers on this one because the Giants didn’t name a starter until late, but now that books are confident that Cobb will take the ball, we’re starting to see some betting patterns. 67% of the early wagers have been on Arizona, but it’s apparent that this is small money because the consensus number has been bumped up on the Giants, opening as high as -160 in Vegas. We still believe that putting our money behind Alex Cobb is the smarter play.

Cobb has done a 360 for bettors after a 10-17 season (-926 units in 2022). This year, the betting public has enjoyed 599 units of profit with Cobb on the mound, with his team facing a club they’ve owned over the years.

Bet San Francisco at home. That does it for our Diamondbacks vs Giants betting odds preview, we wish you nothing but the best with your wagers this week.
