Mychal Givens Stats: Veteran Reliever On IL With Shoulder Injury

AL Contending Orioles Hope to Get Veteran Mychal Givens Back Later this Season

Return to the Baltimore Orioles Hasn’t Gone as Planned for Reliever Mychal Givens

One of the under-the-radar moves by the Baltimore Orioles was the decision to bring back relief pitcher Mychal Givens. However, Mychal Givens stats were not pretty before he landed on the injured list.

The 33-year-old righty suffered a shoulder injury and recently was transferred to the 60-day injured list.

Givens is one of 24 players who has pitched for the Orioles in the first 89 games of the season.

Coming into the season, Baltimore was priced at +6500 to win the World Series and those MLB playoff odds have moved to +2500. The Orioles had the longest odds of +1800 to win the American League East title. Heading into the MLB All-Star break, Baltimore (+400) is second only to the Tampa Bay Rays in the odds to win the American League East title. The Orioles haven’t won a division title since 2014.

When looking at the Baltimore Orioles schedule when play resumed, the first 20 games following the MLB All-Star Game come against teams with winning records and that includes 11 matchups with AL East teams.

A Rough Homecoming

It is safe to say that this is not what Mychal Givens stats figured to look like in his second stint with the Baltimore Orioles.

Givens was signed as a free agent by the Orioles in December with the hope of adding a veteran arm out of the bullpen.

Givens allowed one hit, one run with two walks, and a strikeout in a May 21 win over Toronto in his first appearance for the Orioles since 2020.

In six appearances, all in May, Givens allowed four hits and six runs with six walks in four innings against Cleveland. His most recent outing was not pretty as he gave up two hits and three runs without retiring a batter as his ERA jumped from 4.50 to 11.25. He is one of seven relief pitchers for the Orioles with an ERA of 6.00 or higher. The Orioles are 2-4 in games pitched by Givens this season.

Givens’ MLB career began with him not allowing a run in his first five appearances while working out of the bullpen for Baltimore. He ended his rookie season by allowing one run in 10 innings over his last seven outings.

Welcome Back

Givens was listed as a shortstop when he was the 54th overall selection in the 2009 MLB Entry Draft. He was taken five spots before All-Star third baseman Nolan Arenado was picked by the Colorado Rockies.

Steven Matz and Patrick Corbin were among the other pitchers taken in the second round who made an impact at the major league level.

Givens hit .247 in 357 games over eight minor-league baseball seasons. During his time as a position player, most of his time was spent as a shortstop.

He made his professional debut in 2010, Givens pitched for the first time as Class A Delmarva in 2013. When looking at Mychal Givens’ stats, within two years, he posted a 1.80 ERA in 22 relief appearances with the Orioles with 38 strikeouts in 30 games.

In the midst of his fifth season with the Orioles, he headed to Colorado in 2020. He also had stops with the Cincinnati Reds, Chicago Cubs, and New York Mets before returning to the Orioles. His best season came during his rookie season. He has a 32-24 record with a 3.47 ERA and 31 saves in 425 career games.

What’s Next?

The Orioles are making a push for the American League East title and currently hold down the top wild-card spot in the AL playoff race so there will be plenty to play for when Givens is cleared to return to the field.

Baltimore is sixth in the majors with a 3.68 ERA out of the bullpen. However, that number jumps to 4.49 when the numbers of all-stars Felix Bautista and Yennier Cano so there could be a role for him later in the season. With 10 of the 12 relievers on the active Baltimore roster being in their 20s, having a veteran like Givens could prove to be beneficial in the heat of a pennant race.
