Padres vs Jays Game Odds: Can the Underachieving Find Success North of the Border?

Red-Hot Pitcher Blake Snell Set to Throw for Padres in Thursday's Series Finale

Toronto Looks to Keep Pace in the Competitive AL East Division

The San Diego Padres were tied for third and the Toronto Blue Jays seventh in the odds to win the World Series coming into the season. It is a much different story now with Toronto currently holding down one of the wild-card spots in the American League and San Diego eight games out of the final playoff berth in the National League. The Padres vs Jays game odds favor San Diego in Tuesday’s series opener.

A quick look at the baseball standings shows that San Diego is 19-27 on the road this season while Toronto is 26-18 at home. The Blue Jays have won four games in a row. San Diego just got swept by the Philadelphia Phillies to fall even further back in the NL West standings.

Toronto (+2000) is tied for seventh in the odds to win the World Series. San Diego (+3300) is 13th in the championship odds.

Machado Delivering for Padres

Consider veteran infielder Manny Machado to be a barometer of success for the Padres.

San Diego has won six of the last seven games when Machado had at least two hits with the Padres going 2-11 over the last 13 games when he has one hit or less. That could play a role in the Padres vs Jays game odds.

Machado has picked things up in the power department. He had no home runs over the last seven games in June. In his first 12 games in July, Machado has hit eight home runs and 18 RBIs.

The total has gone over in four of San Diego’s last five games as well as in seven of its last eight road games.

Bullpen Coming Through for Blue Jays

Since losing back-to-back games to Boston, the Blue Jays are 8-1 and that includes a 3-0 record in one-run games.

A key in Toronto’s surge has been the ability to pitch out of jams as opponents are a combined 12-for-53 with runners in scoring position.

Relief pitchers Yimi Garcia, Bowden Francis, Jay Jackson, Tim Mayza, and Nate Pearson have yet to allow a run in July. Keep that in mind when looking at the Padres vs Jays game odds.

The total has gone under in 10 of Toronto’s last 15 games.

Who’s Hot

  • Whit Merrifield, Toronto Blue Jays IF: Merrifield is 8-for-18 with five runs and four RBIs during a five-game hitting streak.
  • Nate Pearson, Toronto Blue Jays P: Pearson hasn’t allowed a run in his last eight appearances. He has allowed three hits and struck out eight in 9.2 innings during that stretch.
  • Blake Snell, San Diego Padres P: Snell hasn’t allowed a run in five of his last appearances. In three starts in July, he has allowed 11 hits and no runs with 25 strikeouts in 16 innings.
  • Fernando Tatis Jr., San Diego Padres OF: Tatis has five multi-hit games in July as he is batting .347 with nine runs, six extra-base hits, and 12 RBIs in 12 games.

Who’s Not

  • Chris Bassitt, Toronto Blue Jays P: Bassitt has given up 22 hits and eight runs in 16 innings in his last three starts.
  • Brett Honeywell, San Diego Padres P: Honeywell has surrendered seven hits and five runs in 3.1 innings in his last five outings.
  • Gary Sanchez, San Diego Padres C: Sanchez has four hits in his last 34 at-bats with six strikeouts during that stretch.
  • Daulton Varsho, Toronto Blue Jays OF: Varsho is 2-for-22 with six strikeouts over his last seven games.

Padres vs Blue Jays Injury Update

Pitcher Steven Wilson has been activated off the 15-day injured list and he could be available for the Padres. Catcher Luis Campusano, infielder Eguy Rosario, as well as pitchers Drew Carlton, Robert Suarez, and Michael Wacha, could return before the end of the month.

For Toronto, closer Jordan Romano is questionable due to back tightness. The Blue Jays are already without pitchers Chad Green and Hyun Jin Ryu. That could impact the Padres vs Blue Jays matchup.

Padres vs Blue Jays Betting Preview

There’s not much recent between the Padres and Blue Jays. The teams haven’t met since 2019 when visiting San Diego won two of the three games and that included a 19-4 win. Each of the last five times that the teams met, the game finished over the total.

Toronto and San Diego are a combined 74-61 when listed as the favorite this season compared to a 20-28 record as underdogs.

The Blue Jays are just 19-25 against the spread at home this season with the Padres covering in 23 of 46 road contests.

When looking at the MLB stats, San Diego is tied for the MLB lead with 21 home runs in July with Toronto seventh with a .266 batting average in July.
