Yoshinobu Yamamoto Has Dropped to Third in NL ROY Odds

The Favorites Might Surprise You After Looking at The 2024 MLB ROY Odds

We’re not even a month into the MLB season, but some of the league’s top rookies have put in very encouraging performances.

Heading into the season, many considered Yoshinobu Yamamoto the favorite to win the NL Rookie of the Year. The Dodgers just paid him a significant amount of money after multiple stunning seasons in Japan. However, he’s not leading the odds board on the NL side.

Meanwhile, in the American League, many fans saw Evan Carter in the MLB Playoffs. Carter came on late in the season and put together some big-time performances with the Rangers to lead them to a World Series title..

Uncover Exclusive Picks & Predictions From Our Experts.

However, Carter isn’t the favorite to win the American League. It’s an Oriole, but that Oriole isn’t named Jackson Holliday.

As we approach the beginning of May, we’ll break down the 2024 MLB ROY odds for the National League and American League.

2024 MLB NL ROY Odds Preview

Jackson Merrill (+400) Jackson Merrill (+400)

The Padres slimmed their roster before this season, hoping your prospects like Jackson Merrill would produce at a high level.

In 27 games, Merrill has hit .318 with a .378 OBP. He’s also struck out just 16 times in 88 at-bats and has 12 RBIs on 28 hits. Merrill hasn’t just been a good hitter. He’s also stole four bases and has looked really comfortable in the outfield.

However, a stat line of one home run likely won’t win the award. Be wary of picking Merrill to win the NL Rookie of the Year Award.

Michael Busch (+425) Michael Busch (+425)

While Michael Busch has hit a lower average, he’s still knocked six home runs in 75 at-bats. The former Dodgers prospect played just 26 games with Los Angeles last year and hit .167. But in his true rookie season, he’s batting .280 with a .349 OBP.

If his power surge can continue, he’ll be a much better option to win the award.

What About The Pitchers?

Yoshinobu Yamamoto has struck out 30 batters in five starts, tied for 24th in the MLB. However, his 4.50 ERA isn’t very good. He’s allowed seven runs in his last two starts, along with 11 hits in 11 innings.

Yamamoto has a lot of potential. But each lousy start will hurt his chances of winning the award in the future.

Meanwhile, Pittsburgh’s Jared Jones has a .279 ERA and a .83 WHIP to begin the season. He’s allowed just nine runs on 20 hits in 29 innings. However, the Pirates are playing it safe with Jones and have limited his innings, which will ultimately hurt his chances at the award.

Finally, while the Cubs didn’t win the biggest international sweepstakes, they look like big winners. They signed Shota Imanaga to a much better contract than Yamamoto’s. He’s got a .84 ERA with a .75 WHIP in four starts this season. He might not be the best strikeout thrower, but he’ll be considered if he continues putting up these numbers.

After all, as of now, Imanaga has the most impressive stats by an NL rookie. Just look at the opposition’s MLB scores when he’s on the mound.

AL ROY Odds

Check out the odds for the 2024 MLB ROY odds in the American League as of April 25, 2024.

2024 MLB AL ROY Odds Preview

Colton Cowser (+150) Colton Cowser (+150)

Colton Cowser got a little taste of the MLB last season. He had 61 at-bats and hit just .115 with a .286 OBP. He also didn’t hit a home run last year.

However, things have changed this year. Cowser has slugged six home runs and 17 RBIs. He also has an OBP of .406 and an OPS of 1.139.

Cowser was always a top prospect for the Orioles. However, he was overlooked because of names like Jackson Holliday, Jordan Westburg, and Grayson Rodriguez.

If Cowser continues to produce like this, he’ll win the AL Rookie of the Year.

Evan Carter (+325) Evan Carter (+325)

The exact opposite happened to Evan Carter.

Carter dominated in his first stint with the Rangers. In 62 at-bats, he hit a .306 average with a .413 OBP. He also had an OPS of 1.058 and was brilliant in the playoffs for the Rangers.

However, maybe pitchers have figured him out. While Carter has hit four home runs this season, he’s only hitting 215 with a .315 OBP. His OPS went down to .771 after it reached 1.058 last season.

Carter was the favorite, but he’s no longer with these numbers.

Wyatt Langford mug Wyatt Langford & Jackson Holliday Jackson Holliday mug

Heading into Spring Training, all MLB fans could talk about was Wyatt Langford and Jackson Holliday.

The MLB rumors suggested both would get the call to play in the Majors to begin the season.

Only Wyatt Langford did.

Langford is known for his power. He ultimately destroyed in Spring Training and got the big league invite before the season began.

However, in 88 at-bats this season, he hasn’t hit a single home run. Langford has instead hit a .261 average with nine RBIs. However, his OPS is .658, which is 125th in the MLB.

Langford hasn’t struggled per se, but he’s still got a -.2 WAR and no home runs. That won’t land him an American League Rookie of the Year title.

Jackson Holliday got the call to come to the Majors about two weeks into the season. He’s the top prospect of the Orioles and the son of Matt Holliday. Because he was tearing up the minor leagues, people expected Holliday to come in and shine with the big league club.

Instead, he’s got two hits in 34 at-bats and has 18 strikeouts. He’s hitting .059 with a .170 OPS. It’s going to take a little while for Holliday to get acclimated. He’s not ready yet and doesn’t have the MLB stats to win the AL Rookie of the Year.
