Stanford Cardinal 2023 Future Odds

Stanford Suffers in Transfer Portal After Coach David Shaw's Departure

Who Will Be the No. 1 Quarterback is One of the Questions

Stanford will have a head coach other than David Shaw for the first time since 2010 as former Sacramento State coach Troy Taylor takes over a team that finished 10th in total offense and total defense. When it comes to the 2023 Stanford Cardinal stats, that is not the type of consistency the fans are looking for.

Just a handful of starters are back for Stanford and time will tell if that is a bad thing.

Don’t look for much in the way of help via the transfer portal as Stanford has the lowest-rated group of incoming transfers in the Pac-12. Former Harvard offensive tackle Alec Bank and Princeton offensive tackle Trevor Mayberry are among the transfers to keep an eye on. The academic standards limit the ability to bring in impact transfers as Stanford’s conference rivals are able to do.

Shaw won at least 10 games in five of his first six seasons and in his first eight seasons, the Cardinal had an overall winning record and were above .500 in conference play.

Plenty of Rebuilding Under Way at Stanford

The offensive line took a hit with Barrett Miller now at Cal, Walter Rouse transferring to Oklahoma, Drake Metcalf landing at UCF, Jake Hornibrook moving onto Duke and Michigan adding Myles Hinton and Drake Nugent.

Tanner McKee threw for 2,947 yards with 13 touchdowns and eight interceptions. Ari Patu and Ashton Daniels return after throwing a combined total of 15 passes a season ago with Syracuse transfer Justin Lamson also competing for the starting job so it is hard to project what the 2023 Stanford Cardinal stats will look like.

Having E.J. Smith (206 yards, three TDs) for more than two games will be a huge help while tight end Benjamin Yurosek will be a popular target for whoever wins the quarterback job. Yurosek had 49 catches a season ago and a tight end led Taylor’s Sacramento State team in receptions in each of the last two seasons. Keep that in mind when it comes to the 2023 Stanford Cardinal stats.

National Championship Odds: Not Going to Happen

Perhaps Southern California, Utah, or another Pac-12 team will play their way into the national championship picture, but it is not going to happen at Palo Alto. A more realistic goal would to be become bowl eligible and that is something that hasn’t happened since Stanford played in the Sun Bowl following the 2018 season.

Hawaii and Sacramento State are the early non-conference games and the Cardinal get Pac-12 favorite USC out of the way in Week 2 of the season.

Conference Odds: Plenty of Work to Do

Stanford’s lone Pac-12 win in 2022 came against Arizona State and the Sun Devils are not on the schedule in 2023. If there is a silver lining, a quick look at the NCAA football scores shows that two of the conference losses came by seven points or less.

Winning the game against Arizona could be important because otherwise there could be a possibility of a winless run through the conference play as Stanford finished tied for last in the Pac-12 with Colorado when it came to the 2022 NCAA football standings.

Stanford had five players taken in the 2023 NFL Draft, the second most in the Pac-12 and two others signed as undrafted free agents so there are some holes to fill. Stanford has had the most players taken in the NFL Draft among Pac-12 programs since 2012 so Shaw certainly knew how to recruit. Will Taylor have a similar track record?

Stanford had the ninth-best group of incoming freshmen among Pac-12 teams, according to the 247sports.com database. That ranking has jumped to second in the Class of 2024.

Regular Season Wins: Three and Out for Cardinal?

If Stanford beats Hawaii and Sacramento State, that gives the Cardinal nine chances to get the third win and that is expected regular season win total.

Stanford plays Arizona, Oregon, UCLA, Washington, and Cal at home and ends the regular season at home against Notre Dame. Stanford might be able to get one victory out of those home games, but coming up with two wins to finish over might be asking quite a bit considering the roster turnover.

To Make the Playoffs: Not in This Sport

Stanford has plenty of successful teams on campus and has the national championships to prove it with 134 team championships the most at the NCAA Division I level.

The tennis, soccer, and swimming programs have been among the best in the country for decades. It is a different story on the gridiron with the last national title for Stanford coming in 1940. The last Pac-12 title came in 2015.

Even when the College Football Playoff field expands from four to 12 teams, when it comes to college football predictions, it seems unlikely that Stanford will be part of the race for the college football national title.
